Alabama law makers have enacted a new law that will ban the sale of dildos and vibrators in the state, however, it is still legal to sell guns on street corners. Is there really anything else that needs to be said about this?
This may seem like a fine line law to you, but as a current law student, I know there are always gray areas. Just you wait until someone invents the ‘dildo gun’. I can’t wait to see the court debates on that one!

Keren Dunaway was 5 when her parents used drawings to explain to her that they both had the HIV virus _ and so did she.
Now the 12-year-old is one of the most prominent AIDS activists in Latin America and a rarity in a region where few children are willing to break the silence and tell their classmates they have HIV for fear of rejection. She edits a children's magazine on the virus.
On Sunday evening, Keren shares the stage with the Mexican president and U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon as they open an international AIDS conference.
She flashes a dimpled smile, exposing a row of braces, and settles comfortably into her chair before expertly fastening on a microphone. She talks matter-of-factly about the virus she has had since birth.
"It's like a little ball that has little dots, and is inside me, sort of swimming inside me," she said in an interview with The Associated Press, curling her fist as she recalls what her parents explained to her with drawings long ago.
Keren's openness about her HIV status comes as the virus's victims grow increasingly younger.
Worldwide, people ages 15-24 accounted for 45 percent of people infected with HIV in 2007, according to the 2008 U.N. AIDS report.
In Latin America, 55,000 of the nearly 2 million people with the virus were under 15 years old, the vast majority of them infected by their mothers. Only 36 percent of pregnant women in the region receive medicine to prevent transmission, although that is an increase of 26 percent since 2004.
And while more than 60 percent of the adults with HIV receive antiretroviral drugs in Latin America, only about one-third of children do. Experts say less research and funding has been dedicated to medicine for HIV-positive children, who require smaller doses and additional medication to offset the aggressiveness of antiretrovirals.
Even so, children born with HIV are increasingly looking forward to long lives.
"There's a whole new generation of young people that were born with HIV that are reaching adulthood. It presents very interesting challenges," said Nils Katsberg, UNICEF'S director of Latin America and the Caribbean.
It won't be easy encouraging HIV-positive children to speak out in Latin America, where talking openly about sexuality is often taboo.
When she first started school, Keren's classmates refused to play with her. Speaking out about HIV made all the difference. At 9, she began accompanying her parents _ founders of the AIDS advocacy group "Llaves" _ on talks to schools. She has visited half-a-dozen countries to share her story.
Last year, she started up "Llavecitas," a children's version of a magazine her parents publish. The Llaves foundation distributes 10,000 copies every two months across Honduras.
But too often, children with HIV "live in a culture of secrecy," said Maria Villanueva Medina, a psychologist with Casa de la Sal, a group that runs an orphanage for children with HIV in Mexico City.
"They can't talk about their diagnosis in the school because they can be kicked out. They can't talk about it in their communities with their neighbors."
At Casa de la Sal, children are told about the virus around the same age as Keren was, but few dare to tell their schoolmates even where they live.
Casa de la Sal is adapting to a new reality. When it first opened 22 years ago, many of the children died by the time they reached their teens. Today, the orphanage has not had a death in 10 years. The government provides antiretrovirals.
Faced with the challenge of preparing the children for adulthood, the orphanage eventually began sending them to regular schools instead of giving classes within the institution.
The hope is that someday, many will be outspoken advocates for their own cause.
"We need to start getting young people involved in leadership again in HIV and AIDS because it's easy to get kind of complacent," said Joe Cristina, whose Los Angeles-based Children Affected by AIDS Foundation helps fund the orphanage.
Keren writes an upbeat editorial each week. ("I want to congratulate all the boys and girls who have graduated and got good grades. Keep it up!!") She is now popular among her classmates.

100 People A Week Lose A Limb Through Diabetes

A hundred people a week in the UK have a lower limb amputated as a result of diabetes, warns Diabetes UK today. The leading health charity says to reduce this figure there is an urgent need for greater awareness of the impact of the condition, which as well as lower limb amputation can lead to other devastating complications such as heart attacks, stroke, blindness and kidney failure.

Amputation is a complication of diabetes caused by damage to the nerves and blood vessels that serve the limbs. Alarmingly, up to 70 per cent of people die within five years of having an amputation as a result of diabetes. Currently more than half of the general public do not associate diabetes with amputations and worryingly one in three people with diabetes do not realise that having the condition puts them more at risk of having an amputation.

"This situation is shocking given that most amputations can be prevented with better awareness and management of the condition. People with diabetes need to have optimum support, guidance and clinical care to help minimise the risks of amputation," said Douglas Smallwood, Chief Executive of Diabetes UK.

"We want to see all people with diabetes have better access to podiatrists and to a regular foot check as part of their annual medical review. People with diabetes who are assessed as being at risk of foot problems need to have access to high quality integrated specialist foot care services to save the foot and reduce the likelihood of amputation."

Suspect in pregnant teen death had baby obsession

PITTSBURGH - A woman accused of slicing open a pregnant woman's belly and taking her baby was obsessed with getting an infant and even had hallucinations of hearing babies cry after a February 1990 miscarriage, according to court records.

A few months later, Andrea Curry-Demus stabbed one woman in an apparent plot to steal her newborn; the next day, she kidnapped another baby from a hospital.

Curry-Demus, 38, of Wilkinsburg, just east of Pittsburgh, was charged Sunday with homicide, kidnapping and related offenses in the death of Kia Johnson, 18.

Johnson's decomposing body, with her wrists and ankles bound by duct tape and layers of tape and plastic covering much of her head, was found Friday in Curry-Demus' apartment. A day earlier Curry-Demus had taken the baby to a hospital, claiming first that she was the mother and later that she paid for the child.

Authorities say the two women met at the Allegheny County jail on July 15 while visiting different inmates.

Efforts to determine if Curry-Demus has an attorney have been unsuccessful and no hearing has been set on the current charges.

Court records for Curry-Demus' 1990 criminal cases paint a picture of a woman apparently unable to deal with the loss of her own child in her seventh month of pregnancy. She was 21 at the time, and told authorities she also had miscarried at age 12.

"While she admitted committing the offenses, she had great difficulty in verbalizing her feelings or motivations other than to mention the loss of her own child due to a miscarriage several months prior to the present offenses," according to a presentence report prepared for the two criminal cases.

According to court records, Curry-Demus visited Magee-Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh in the spring of 1990 and she befriended a woman who had recently given birth there.

They exchanged numbers and Curry-Demus called the woman a few days later, telling her she wanted to visit the baby and bring some clothes. She spent the day with the woman, her husband and the new baby and even asked to stay overnight.

The woman wasn't comfortable with that and a jitney was called for Curry-Demus in the early morning of May 5. While the woman was looking out the window for the jitney, Curry-Demus grabbed her from behind and stabbed her in the back. Curry-Demus fled when the woman called for her husband.

Hours later, Curry-Demus visited another hospital and met a young mother whose 3-week-old baby was being treated for meningitis. The next day - May 6 - several nurses saw Curry-Demus at the hospital and later noticed the baby was missing.

Police located Curry-Demus by tracing calls made from the hospital to Curry-Demus' mother. The baby was recovered unharmed.

Curry-Demus pleaded guilty in January 1991 to kidnapping, concealment of the whereabouts of child and related offenses and was sentenced to 3 to 10 years in state prison for taking the baby from the hospital. She also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in the stabbing case and received 10 years' probation. She was released in 1998.

While awaiting resolution of the 1990 cases, Curry-Demus was twice briefly committed to a state mental hospital. An examination found her to be "in the midst of a major depressive episode." She also reported auditory hallucinations - that she kept "hearing babies cry."

She was found competent to stand trial, but also diagnosed with major depression and a mixed personality disorder. She graduated high school, but tests showed she had a "borderline intelligence level."

Johnson's funeral will be Friday in McKeesport, her family announced. In obituary information provided by a funeral home, the family said Johnson volunteered with the Salvation Army, helping with the homeless and day care.

The family has named her son after her: Terrell Kian Johnson.

Source of Largest Salmonella Outbreak in U.S. History May Never Be Found, Says FDA

June 27, 2008 -- The salmonella outbreak in tomatoes isn't over and it's already the largest salmonella outbreak the CDC has ever tracked, in terms of lab-confirmed reported illness.
Since the outbreak began in April, the CDC has gotten reports of 810 people in 36 states and Washington, D.C., sickened by Salmonella saintpaul, the outbreak's rare strain of salmonella.
The most recent onset of illness was June 15, and that may not be the last case, since the CDC gets reports of illness about 16 days after an illness starts, says Patricia Griffin, MD, chief of the CDC's enteric diseases epidemiology branch.
Griffin notes that in 1985, a salmonella outbreak in milk sickened more than 16,000 people, but those cases weren't all confirmed by lab tests, unlike the number of cases in the current salmonella tomato outbreak.
Salmonella infection (salmonellosis) can cause diarrhea (which may be bloody), fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Symptoms typically start 12-72 hours after infection.
Salmonella Tomato Source Unknown
The FDA hasn't found the source of the tomato salmonella outbreak -- and they admit they may never find it.
On June 20, the FDA sent investigators to several farms in Florida and Mexico. Those investigators were assigned to probe not only the farms, but the entire distribution chain from plant to plate.
"It's important to control expectations and it's possible that this investigation may not provide a smoking gun that enables us to pinpoint the source of the contamination," David Acheson, MD, the FDA's associate commissioner for foods, said at a news conference today.
Part of the problem, Acheson says, is a practice called "repacking," in which suppliers or distributors repack boxes of tomatoes to fit customers' requests. That leads to tomatoes from various sources, domestic and imported, getting mixed together in the repacked boxes, making it hard to trace where the tomatoes have been and where the contamination may have occurred.
So far, the FDA teams have collected about 1,700 samples for testing -- none of which have shown any signs of Salmonella saintpaul.
Acheson says it's "not that unusual" for the source of tomato outbreaks to elude investigators.
"We've dealt with a number in the past and it's not that infrequent for us to be unable to actually trace back specifically to the source," says Acheson. "The whole repacking issue is one of the major reasons why this is so difficult."
Health officials are also looking at products such as salsa and guacamole that contain raw tomatoes, according to media reports.
Safe Tomato List
Officials are still searching for the source of the salmonella tomato contamination. Meanwhile, not all tomatoes are off limits.
Cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, and tomatoes sold while still on the vine, and homegrown tomatoes -- from any area -- have been on the "safe" list all along.

Los Angeles authorities say a graffiti tagger has been arrested after videos of the suspect allegedly performing the crimes were posted on YouTube.
Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies allege Cyrus Yazdani, who goes by the name “Buket,” appears in several YouTube videos defacing signs and buses with spray paint, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.
Sheriff’s officials said Yazdani, 24, was arrested when he showed up to meet with his probation officer Tuesday and was expected to be charged with multiple charges of felony vandalism.
Yazdani is believed to be responsible for $150,000 in property damage, authorities said.

SALT LAKE CITY - Police say a woman stole two 14-karat gold bracelets - by swallowing them. An employee at Hy & Mike's Pawn and Bail Bonds told police he saw the woman put the bracelets in her mouth May 27. Court documents say Salt Lake City investigators confirmed it by watching the surveillance video.
The bracelets, valued around $2,000, have been recovered. Police spokesman Jeff Bedard says he doesn't know just how the jewelry was collected.
Norma Porchas, 41, was charged with retail theft. FDA: Time for asthma patients to switch inhalers

Old-fashioned asthma inhalers that contain environment-harming chemicals will no longer be sold at year's end - and the government is urging patients not to wait until the last minute to switch to newer alternatives.
Patients use inhalers to dispense airway-relaxing albuterol during asthma attacks.
Chemicals called chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs, once were widely used to propel the drug into the lungs. But CFC-containing consumer products are being phased out because CFCs damage the Earth's protective ozone layer. As of Dec. 31, asthma inhalers with CFCs can no longer be made or sold in the U.S. Inhalers instead will be powered by ozone-friendly HFAs, or hydrofluoroalkanes.
The ozone layer shields the planet from harmful ultraviolet radiation.
Patients have been warned of the change for several years, but the Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory Friday saying anyone still using CFC inhalers should ask their doctor about switching now.
The FDA warns that patients will face a learning curve: HFA inhalers may taste and feel different. The spray may feel softer. Each must be primed and cleaned in a specific way to prevent clogs. And they tend to cost more.
CFC-free albuterol inhaler options include GlaxoSmithKline's Ventolin HFA, Schering Plough's Proventil HFA and Teva Specialty Pharmaceuticals' ProAir HFA. Sepracor's Xopenex HFA is also CFC-free, but it contains levalbuterol, a similar medication.
The FDA said Armstrong Pharmaceuticals is the sole remaining maker of CFC inhalers and is expected to stop production even before the deadline. A spokesman for Armstrong's parent company wouldn't say when production would stop, but sales of remaining inventory will continue until Dec. 31. ource" Health News

How to Use Soft Drinks To Kill Mice and Rats

Do you have a problem with mice or rats and wish you could use any assortment of pesticide type products but are afraid of the risks to your children or pets? I have the answer for you! Soda Pop!!

Things You’ll Need:
Pepsi or Coke
Step1Mice and rats lack the ability to burp. You can use this to your advantage - and the demise of the rats and mice.
Step2Pour pepsi or coke into a shallow dish.
Step3Place dish near where the mice or rats are entering/exiting your home frequently.
Step4The rodents will drink the sweet soft drink and later, when they can't burp, they will die.

Tips & Warnings
Right next to walls usually works best for any type of bait or traps, as does under sinks, etc where they may like to hide out, or try underneath your stove.

If you don't care for this idea, maybe you could consider rescuing a cat from your local kill shelter. :)

As the carbonation only lasts just so long, you will need to keep that in mind and refill your dish accordingly. Try putting a new dish down each night before bed.
