Detecting Skin Cancer early can save your Life

                 Freckle, Mole, or Cancer?

Heather Fraelick

Gloucester, Massachusetts

Diagnosed with melanoma at 25

Recurrence at 27

Now healthy at 29

Heather Fraelick was 25 when she noticed the pink, raised spot on her right forearm. "It looked like a bug bite," she says, but when it bled and didn't seem to heal she went to the dermatologist. The bump didn't have the classic look of a melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer --but it was. "I was absolutely shocked, and I learned how deadly melanoma can be if it isn't caught early," she says. "It was much more invasive than I expected, which was really frightening." A surgeon removed the lesion as well as five lymph nodes under her arm. Luckily, all were cancer-free, which meant it hadn't spread.

Two years later, though, she noticed a tiny freckle on the scar. The melanoma had recurred, but the surgeon was able to successfully remove it. As an athlete who played sports for years without sunscreen and visited the tanning salon before her prom, Fraelick, now 29, has learned her lesson. Although she lives on the ocean in Gloucester, Massachusetts, she never goes outdoors without wearing protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen.

Lee Cavanaugh is glad she had a recurring blemish on her hairline checked out. "I was shocked that it was skin cancer because I was only 32," says the New York City interior designer. She had the basal-cell tumor removed surgically and now she's examined by her doctor every six months. "No more basking in the sun. I'm into sunless tanners now," she says.

Fraelick's and Cavanaugh's stories aren't rare. Doctors are seeing more and more skin cancer among people in their 20s and 30s. "When I was a resident, skin cancer wasn't a disease young people got," says James M. Spencer, MD, a dermatologist in St. Petersburg, Florida. "Now I see it in somebody every month." The rates in 40- and 50-year-olds continue to rise, too. He speculates that increased UV exposure is to blame. "Your grandmother didn't fly to Jamaica for a vacation, and she sure didn't go to a tanning salon, either," he adds.

No matter your age, skin color, or sun habits, early detection is key. Follow our guidelines for keeping an eye on your (and your family's) skin. Then make an appointment if anything seems vaguely suspicious. It could save your life!

Geet Rid of a Zit Pimple overnight

When you're trying to get rid of zit, my recommendation is that you do not pop them. The reason is, the pus that is typical for zits can spread during popping causing the infection to spread or worsen.
Ingredients mentioned in this treatment to get rid of zit are active yeast and tea tree oil. Active yeast is recommended for oily skin types because it does a great job absorbing the grease and grease or extra
Essential tea tree oil (Essential eucalyptus oil will worcotton square directly over your pimple. Use the tape to secure the oil and yeast to your skin.

Step 5:

Leave the bandage on over night. In the morning your pimple should be completely free of pus and gone

Tips:

Obviously, this method is not ideal for getting a case of acne under control. This method is best for one or two isolated but HUGE ZITS. Though the technique is cumbersome, it does work. Just make sure that your bandage completely closes the oil and yeast over your pimple

*The larger or more pus-filled your pimple is, the larger your bandage should be. Overnight, pus will seep out of your skin and into the cotton square. Make sure you have enough cotton to absorb the evacuating pus.Source: The Web

Old Folks Remedies for Age Spots

                  What are age spots?

Age spots are also known as liver spots or sun spots, as well as lentigines. They are flat, yellow or brown discolorations of the skin. They usually occur on the neck, hands, and face in those people over the age of forty.

Age spots on the skin usually indicate there has been sun damage. They may also be caused by an impaired liver function, dietary and nutritional deficiencies. A lack of antioxidants in your diet may also play a role in the development of age spots.

It happens to the best of us, but don't despair, there are a few things that you can try in order to lighten, fade or perhaps get rid of age spots.

Remedies:

Apple Cider Vinegar and Onion Juice

Apple cider vinegar acts as an exfoliator and also helps to lighten age spots.

Mix one part apple cider vinegar and one part juice of a finely chopped or a blended onion. Using a cheese cloth or strainer, squeeze the onion in order to extract its juices. Mix together and using a cotton pad, apply directly to the age spots. You may repeat this daily for about six-weeks. If the spots don't disappear during this time, continue with the process until they do.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera gel, juice, or pulp may be used on age spots as well. Simply apply to the spots twice a day. You should see improvement in about a month.

Lemon Juice:

Fresh lemon juice can be dabbed on the spot using a cotton ball twice a day. The lemon juice peels off the lower layer of skin, and in time should remove the age spot or at least lighten it. You should see results in six to eight weeks.

Other remedies:

Prepare a concoction of radish, lime juice, rosemary oil, and vinegar. Apply to age spots.

Make a mask consisting of rose water and Sandal powder. Apply, allow to dry, then wash the area clean.

Mix 1/8 teaspoon powdered gotu kola into a cup of herbal tea or hot water along with 1/8 teaspoon of ginseng and a pinch of cayenne. This should eliminate the age spots within a matter of a few days.

Make a mixture of olive oil and vinegar in equal parts. Apply one hour before you bathe.

Kitchen Remedies for Grey Hair

"The only thing to do with gray hair is to admire it." This is true. Nothing so sets off an aged face like the crown of silver. To color it is a great mistake. There is absolutely no cure for it; the one thing we can do is to make it a beauty. Gray hair is due to the exhaustion of the pigment or coloring cells of the hair, supposed to be occasioned by the lack of a regular supply of blood.

For the progressive whitening of the hair due to the advance of age, curative agents are rarely of any avail, especially if the trouble is hereditary. Not that gray hair and baldness are handed down from father to son, but that the peculiarities of constitution which produce them are inherent in both. Nervousness, neuralgia, a low physical condition, aid the falling and blanching of the hair, and the victim should build up the general system. Preparations of iron and sulphur, taken internally, are supposed to supply certain elements of growth and pigment-forming power to the hair.

A solution of iron for external application to the hair, calls for two drams each of citrate of iron and tincture of nux vomica, and one and one-half ounces each of cocoanut oil and bay rum. It may be mentioned here, that faithfulness in treatment means even more than the tonic applied. To gain any real benefit, one must be persistent in application.

Hair often turns gray "in streaks" to the chagrin of the victim. Or it whitens above the forehead and temples and remains dark at the back. Nothing can be done for this.

Gray hair should be kept scrupulously clean, and requires more frequent washing than hair that holds its color. A very little blueing in the rinsing water gives a purer, clearer white. For this use indigo, not the usual washing fluid which is made of Prussian blue. Five cents worth of indigo will last a lifetime.

Can we stop the Friction and Confusion in our Lives

We all have experiences that bring friction into our life. We meet conditions or we associate with people who irritate us. But when we learn to think of personalities as a universal idea, an idea that can neither be destroyed, then the irritation ceases to annoy and upset us. The musicians in a great orchestra, in all probability annoy each other at many times and in many ways. But does that cause them to spoil a performance by not doing their best work? They cannot afford to let petty likes or dislikes separate them from the unisom which must come to the front when they play. Neither can we afford to live without a sense of harmony in all of our affairs. The problems we accept in our dailey lives are as devasting to happiness and progress as being out of tune is to a musical masterpiece. Sometimes we lose ourselves in confusion. We cannot see our way through to the right adjustments, the adjustment which we desire. So we begin to think that if it is impossible to change the conditions to our liking. When that is true, let us turn our thoughts to simple things in life that we enjoy, so that the friction may cease.

Latinos are the most stressed-out adults in the nation!

Latinos Are Most Stressed!

I was shocked to read a new survey just out by The American Psychological Association stating that the most stressed out population in the nation are Latinos.
Marisa TreviƱo of “Hispanic Trending” wrote a very informative article about the new study in which she states:
“The American Psychological Association (APA) released their annual Stress in America survey and the findings are not good for Latino adults
Of all adults, Latinos are recorded as experiencing the highest levels of stress. Fifty percent of Latino adults reported to survey finders that stress has increased in their lives versus last year when only 44% reported having stress — the national average is 42%.
And just what are Latinos stressing out about more than blacks and Anglos?

Decorate cookies for Halloween -Old Folks remedies

Try these easy Halloween cookie tips for making cookie bats, cats, spiders, pumpkins and other favorites for your trick-or-treaters.
Decorated Halloween cookies are super for classroom parties, Halloween get-togethers, costume parties or even your own Halloween party menu.
Decorating Halloween Cookies: Super-Basic Trick or Treat Cookies
Before you can begin decorating your Halloween cookies, of course, you must bake them. You might choose to make fancy Halloween cut-out cookies in holiday shapes (such as bats, cats, pumpkins or other Halloween objects) or simple round ones.
For a phenomenally easy cheater's basic sugar cookie recipe, read "Sugar Cookie Recipes: The Simple and Super-Simple Way" in a new online window.

Before you begin decorating, be sure to bake your Halloween cookies thoroughly and allow them to cool completely.

Decorating Halloween Cookies: Basic Bats

The simplest round sugar cookies can become batty in a flash. The easiest way to decorate Halloween bat cookies is to create a basic bat stencil. Grab a sheet of plain clean paper. Fold it in half, and cut out a basic bat outline. Be sure to make arcs at the top.

Unsure how to create a bat shape? Look at free online clip-art bats at sites like Classroom Clip-art, Clip-Art Kaboose or Webweaver's Clip-Art. Download your choice of clip-art, resize it to fit your cookies and cut it out to make your stencil.

Halloween clip-art sites offer plenty of other designs, besides bat, so you can take your pick for stencil-making and Halloween cookie decorating.

Begin decorating your baked and cooled Halloween cookies by glazing them with a clear or white icing. Let cookies stand until glaze has nearly hardened.

Home Remedy for Poor Circulation of the Legs- Horse Chestnut

Maureen from Buffalo Grove, IL writes: "I've suffered with poor circulation of the legs for a few years now. Standing for short periods of time left my legs feeling tired and achy. My legs had a heavy feeling when walking, too. Worse, any pressure applied to my ankle area resulted in pain. My doctor put his hands around them to see if I was retaining fluid and I could have cried from the pain. After doing research online, I started taking 900 mgs of horse chestnut and 350 mgs of pycnogenol each day. It's been only four weeks, but the difference has been amazing. My legs feel lighter, no more pain near the ankles, no more fatigue when standing for long periods. There have been medical studies on this, which is why I decided to try it myself. I highly recommend taking these supplements at these doses each day for improved circulation of the legs."

Also Apple Cider Vinegar is a good old folks remedey for swollen legs: "Edema, Poor Circulation:
This was also submitted from Jodi from La Quinta Ca.on another site that I know will be of interest to those who suffer with this problem. She wrote:
I recently was told by my Naturopath to begin 1Tbsp of ACV before every meal. One of my health complaints has been very swollen ankles ( even legs sometimes) and cold pale feet. It has been a week and among other things, my ankles are very skinny, my feet now have color again and my overall circulation has improved. I also have dropped 5 pounds- but I'm also following the Elmination Diet to identify allergies so I can't completely credit that to the ACV. My whole body seems to have been de-bloated. I notice that after drinking the ACV my appetite wanes, so I do eat less and can definitely feel my food digesting.

One way to know if you are digesting food properly or not is to check your stools. Do you recognize your meals? If you can identify what's there- you are not digesting your food.

I'm thrilled with the results so far and am anxious to see what else happens from my new dosing."

How to cope when bad things happen all at once

It always seems this way doesn't it? Something bad happens and you struggle to cope. But no sooner than you are attempting to deal with the first event when another crisis hits. There can be this domino effect of one crisis causing another and before you know it you feel shell shocked. How can one cope when multiple bad things happen within the same time frame?

This has happened to me many times and I am sure many of you can relate to this experience as well. I think for many of us, we have this biological predisposition towards depression. And then we get hit by multiple stressors and "BAM!" we find ourselves drowning in emotional despair.

I have personally experienced much trauma and hardship in my life. My most recent challenge was being told that I have a lifelong disease called Multiple Sclerosis. Of course this did not happen at a convenient time. Does it ever? I received my diagnosis pretty much at the same time that my youngest son who has autism was entering a very turbulent adolescent stage. Around this same time I was also asked to come in for a repeat mammogram. They had seen something on the first scans and they needed to repeat the procedure.

I remember feeling emotionally numb as though I were sleepwalking. One day I was fine and the next I wake up to find I had an incurable disease and possibly another medical problem to boot. During this time my son's behaviors seemed to spiral out of control. He was having trouble sleeping through the night; he began to have urinary accidents, and would cry with anger and frustration at the slightest provocation. He would also burst into hyperactive energy which caused him to run and me to run after him. Sometimes I felt more like his bodyguard than his mother.

The thoughts came flooding into my head of "How am I going to do this?" How was it possible that I could cope with autism, Multiple Sclerosis, and also the threat of yet another disease?

There came this moment of clarity for me when I was sitting on my couch and just staring at the living room wall. The light from the window blinds was penetrating through and casting long shadows on the white wall. Time seemed to slow down and me with it. I watched as the shadows changed almost imperceptibly. As the wind would move the leaves outside the window the light would dance and flicker. It was a nothing moment in that nothing extraordinary was happening. But within that moment I can tell you that I changed. I felt calmness and a resolve. The light would always be there. Long after I am gone that light will shine through someone else's window. If I could survive this moment then I could survive others. In between all the crises is the awe of a single moment of clarity.

Sometimes we are pared down to our bare essentials. We become this condensed version of ourselves in order to survive. I believe that is how I coped with this crazy time in my life. I conserved my strength for when I truly needed it and I began to focus on what was most important. One philosophy which has always helped me comes from what is known as the serenity prayer. And if you are not religious, it doesn't matter. In my opinion the serenity prayer is a guide towards wisdom. If you are not familiar with it, it goes like this: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." In times when we are overwhelmed with emotion, it can sometimes be helpful to apply logic to the situation as hard as that may be...Source: HealthCentral.com Lilyruths"This and that friendly cottage" Pets welcomed. MS woman wins right-to-die fight

Debbie Purdy: "It gives me my life back, it means I don't have to make a decision"
A woman with multiple sclerosis has made legal history by winning her battle to have the law on assisted suicide clarified.

Debbie Purdy wanted to know if her husband would be prosecuted if he helped her end her life in Switzerland.

Five Law Lords ruled the Director of Public Prosecutions must specify when a person might face prosecution.

Ms Purdy, 46, from Bradford, said she was "ecstatic" at the ruling and she had been given her life back.

The Director of Public Prosecutions Keir Starmer said he would publish an interim policy on when prosecutions could occur by September before putting the issue out to public consultation. Permanent policy will be published next spring.

Ms Purdy said the Law Lords' decision was "a huge step towards a more compassionate law".

"I'm ecstatic - I feel like I've been given a reprieve.

"I want to live my life to the full but I don't want to suffer unnecessarily at the end of my life.

HAVE YOUR SAY It's not for the state to choose how Debbie Purdy and others live or die. It must be the choice of the individual, with protection from the state for those who help
Jim, Halifax, UK
Send us your comments "The decision means that I can make an informed choice, with Omar, about whether he travels abroad with me to end my life because we will know exactly where we stand."

No one has been prosecuted for assisting someone's death, although the law says they could potentially face 14 years in prison.

The House of Lords, the highest court in the land, said the law was not as clear and precise as it should be.

Five Law Lords unanimously backed Ms Purdy's call for a policy statement from the Director of Public Prosecutions on when someone might face prosecution for helping a loved one end their life abroad.

Ms Purdy said she would like to see the policy distinguish between "what is acceptable and what isn't" so people in situations like hers could make decisions about what to do.

A spokesman from the Ministry of Justice said any change in the law was up to parliament.

"In a free vote on the issue on 7 July, the House of Lords rejected an attempt to decriminalise assisted suicide in circumstances where terminally ill people are helped to travel to countries where assisting dying is lawful," he said.

Human rights

The Law Lords also said she had the right to choose how she died, under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

That must be better than the current legal muddle

Sarah Wootton, Dignity in Dying

Q&A: Assisted suicide ruling
In a summary of their decision, the Law Lords said: "Everyone has the right to respect for their private life and the way that Ms Purdy determines to spend the closing moments of her life is part of the act of living.

"Ms Purdy wishes to avoid an undignified and distressing end to her life. She is entitled to ask that this too must be respected."

She had previously lost challenges in the High Court and Court of Appeal. The Lords ruling was her last chance of success in the UK legal system.

Ms Purdy, married to Cuban violinist Omar Puente, was diagnosed with primary progressive MS in March 1995. She can no longer walk and is gradually losing strength in her upper body.

DPP Keir Starmer: "I will be issuing a policy on assisted suicide"
She has suggested that at some point she may travel to Switzerland to take a lethal dose of barbiturates prescribed by doctors at the controversial Dignitas organisation.

More than 100 UK citizens have so far ended their lives at Dignitas, and no-one who has accompanied them has ever been prosecuted on their return to the UK.

However, the reasons why legal action has not been taken have never been made clear.

'Significant victory'

Ms Purdy had previously said if the law was not clarified she would have had to end her life earlier than she wanted to.

Sarah Wootton, chief executive of Dignity in Dying, said: "This historic judgement ensures the law keeps up with changes in society and crucially, provides a more rational deterrent to abuse than a blanket ban which is never enforced. Source: News
