Weird and Bizarre Facts about Smoking

Smoking was doubtless a familiar practice in the ports of England before the frequently quoted incident of Drake's return from Virginia with a number of colonists in 1586. These men brought with them pipes, tobacco seeds, and plants, and their example of what was at first called "drinking" tobacco smoke (inhaling and apparently swallowing it) is known to have caused considerable excitement and interest.

Can Chihuahuas Cure take away asthma

The belief that a Chihuahua can "take away" asthma from its owner is still held by some, however medical experts reject the idea that the folk remedy can cure asthma.

For many years, the idea that Chihuahuas can cure asthma has been passed around. Citing personal experience or hearsay from someone else, supporters of this idea believe that the toy breed dog really can take away asthma from its owner. They may claim that the dog should sleep on the chest of the asthmatic person to somehow take in the asthma itself.

Short-haired Chihuahuas may be considered somewhat more hypoallergenic than many dog breeds but the scientific and medical community regards the loss of asthma symptoms in the presence of a Chihuahua as purely coincidental or psychosomatic. In fact, in some cases, some dogs and other pets may even bring on asthma symptoms such as shortness of breath and wheezing.
Origin of Chihuahua as an Asthma Cure
chloasma treatment The most effective melasma trtmnt. View our before and after pictures. Melasma.celibre.comMedications For Fibromyalgia Answers to your questions about Fibromyalgia & other pain disorders www.ivillage.comThe origin of this folk remedy is not clear but several theories can be considered. Although asthma treatment includes medications and other measures, at present, the medical world has no cure for the respiratory disease. The majority of asthma cases are successfully managed but some severe asthmatics, in their search for relief, may be willing to accept, and pass on, unorthodox ideas. At any rate, the folk remedy has been around for many years.
One rumor has it that the superstition may be somehow connected with the Aztecs. In history, Chihuahuas were quite popular with the Aztecs who held the belief that the dog would take on the sins of a dead person and guide him through death to afterlife.

Perhaps seeming to add support to the asthma-cure belief, Chihuahuas sometimes have respiratory problems and may make wheezing sounds similar to asthmatics. Since asthma seems to be most prevalent in children who often lose their asthma symptoms as they mature, it may be easy for some to conclude that the coincidental Chihuahua in the household “took away” the asthma from the child.
Stress and Asthma

Another theory may be that acquiring a faithful companion like the Chihuahua may ease stress and tension in the life of the asthma sufferer which in some cases may relieve asthma symptoms. Dogs and other pets have certainly been proven to lower blood pressure and hasten healing in some illnesses.
Managing Asthma

While a Chihuahua can be a good choice as a pet and loyal friend, the best choice of asthma treatment, according to the Mayo Clinic, is under the care of a physician, generally with long-term control medications, quick-relief medications, possible allergy treatment, and avoidance of bronchial inflammation triggers.

10 Things You Didn’t Know About Colds

.

Photo: © Spike Mafford/Thinkstock

A sniffle, a sneeze—you know all about the common cold, right? Or do you? We scoured the latest research and talked to experts to dig up the most surprising things you may not have known about catching and recovering from the common cold.

1. It takes about 48 hours to infect you and make you sick.

That scratchy throat and runny nose that’s coming on? Think back to where you were 48 hours ago. Chances are, that’s where you picked up your cold bug. Experts say that it takes about two days for a cold to embed into the lining of your cells and produce symptoms. Baffled by whether you've come down with the flu or with a cold? While no one can predict how an infection will progress—and sometimes even experts are fooled by colds masquerading as the flu—you can use this rule of thumb from Ron Eccles, BSc, PhD, DSc, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University in the U.K.: “Cold viruses do not usually cause fever in adults,” he says. “Sudden onset, fever and cough are the best predictors of influenza.”

2. The best cold-fighting weapon may be your tennis shoes.

Your medicine cabinet may be stocked with the latest cold-fighting medicines, but when it comes down to it, experts say the best way to protect yourself isn’t with a pill, but by breaking a sweat. Appalachian State University researchers have studied how the immune system and viruses are affected by exercise, and the findings are fascinating: Any exercise, however limited, is great. The researchers say that if you really want to ward off colds this winter, you’re best off working out at least 5 days per week—but no marathon-training is required. A brisk 30-minute walk 5 times per week does the trick to cold-proof your immune system. “Mild exercise is good as it moves the blood around the body and also moves the immune white cells around to search for infection,” says Dr. Eccles.

3. Late nights could be contributing to your sniffling and sneezing.

How much sleep did you get last night? If it was fewer than seven hours, you’re three times more likely to catch a cold, say researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, whose study was published in a recent issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. It’s also important to use your time in bed wisely—meaning, when you're in bed, sleep. The researchers call it “sleep efficiency.” For instance, study participants who spent less than 92 percent of their time in bed asleep were at least five times more likely to pick up a cold virus than those who fell asleep quicker and stayed asleep longer. To get more shut-eye, sleep experts recommend banishing the TV as well as night lights, which can distract and impede your sleep cycles.

4. A tall glass of orange juice isn't a cold cure-all.

When you start to feel the first signs of a cold coming on, what do you do? If your first response is to load up on OJ in hopes of boosting your body’s vitamin C levels, you might reconsider. A major review of more than 30 studies conducted by researchers at Australian National University and the University of Helsinki say that for the majority of people, vitamin C does nothing to prevent or reduce the symptoms of a cold.

Disappointing, yes. But there’s a caveat. If you’re under a lot of stress, or are putting your body to the test—for example, training for a marathon—a daily dose of 200 mg of vitamin C may reduce your chances of catching a cold by about half. To get more C naturally, load up on these foods: oranges and citrus, of course, and also papaya, broccoli, tomatoes, red peppers and kiwi.

5. There’s a flower that may help fight cold viruses.

You’ve probably heard of echinacea, a plant with a stunning pink flower, which is believed to help boost the immune system. University of Connecticut researchers put the theory to the test recently, and after studying more than 1,600 people, they reported that not only did echinacea cut the chances of catching a cold in half, but also those study participants who took it reduced the duration of their colds by about 1.4 days.

Should you supplement with echinacea? It’s worth a try, says Dr. Eccles. "As it is a natural product, it is not possible to standardize the medicine, so, like buying wine, get the best quality from [herbal supplement makers] who have been in the business for a while.”

6. A cold virus could make you fat.

Could you blame that extra 15 pounds you’ve gained on the cold you got last spring? It may not be a far-fetched idea, according to researchers at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. In their study of children, published in a recent issue of the journal Pediatrics, they found that kids who had been infected by adenovirus 36, a common cold virus that causes typical cold symptoms and sometimes gastrointestinal issues, were, on average, 50 pounds heavier than children who hadn’t been infected by the strain, suggesting that a viral infection may cause excess weight gain. While researchers aren’t implying that all cold viruses—even this particular one—cause lifelong weight problems, it's some extra incentive to stay healthy this season, right?

7. Hot drinks can help zap the symptoms of cold viruses.

Your mom was right—tea and hot soup may be the keys to feeling better when you're hit with a bad cold. According to a study published in a recent issue of the journal Rhinology, researchers in England say that simply sipping a hot beverage can provide immediate and sustained relief from your worst cold symptoms, like coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and fatigue. The researchers tested hot beverages versus room-temperature drinks and found that the warmth in a cup had soothing, feel-good properties. Your new feel-better-fast remedy: herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon and one teaspoon of honey, which has also been proven to soothe sore throats.

8. An ingredient found in breast milk can make you feel better fast.

It turns out that an ingredient in breast milk (that you can find via supplements—whew!), may help your most intense cold go away. “A derivative of lauric acid, monolaurin, is a fatty acid found naturally in breast milk,” explains Tom Bayne, DC, a practitioner with ChicagoHealers.com. “It is known to decrease symptoms of the flu and fatigue.” You can find monolaurin supplements at any health food store or vitamin shop and at most pharmacies. As with all natural supplements, talk to your doctor about the right dosage and whether there are any drug contraindications to keep in mind.

9. The average person gets 200 colds in his or her lifetime.

According to estimates, by your 75th birthday, you’re likely to have suffered through 200 colds—that’s two years of your life sneezing! And while children typically get between four and eight colds per year, older people get a break from them. Experts believe this is due to the fact that most elderly people have already been exposed to the majority of cold viruses circulating. But, adds Dr. Eccles, a new virus can be devastating to the elderly, often manifesting in upper respiratory illness.

10. Colds are really not that contagious.

We hear so much about the dreaded rhinovirus that most people think a mere handshake with a sick person is going to send them coughing. Not true, say experts. Recent research by the Cardiff University Common Cold Centre found that when healthy people were put in a room with cold sufferers, it was “remarkably difficult” to spread the infection from one person to another. In fact, the cold virus has to have the ideal conditions when hitting your body to infect you. “Colds are not very contagious, and most colds are caught at home from kids and partners from prolonged and close contact,” says Dr. Eccles. In other words, no need to don a mask in public—just use common  sense.

Healing you find in your Kitchen

Explorations of the Almond as a Health Benefit to Human Kind.

Almonds are not only for decoration on Christmas Cookies, Almonds are a very important healing tool. Cancer research is being done to find a cure based on Almond extracts.

Almonds are not only used as medicine, it is a very essential as food. Ten Almonds equal a half a pound of meat and are important as a protein intake in a survival situation. Contents at a Glance

The Almond Tree is native to the Middle East and is a small deciduous tree, reaching a high of four to ten meters. The fruit of this Tree is also named Almond and is widely cultivated. The Tree will flower 7-8 months each year and produce a hard shelled nut in autumn. Its small pinkish flowers will send their aroma over the country side and the healing starts there.

This Tree is a Tree that gives us natural healing and has now been discovered to be helpful in Cancer prevention and reduction. The Healing Food in a Nut Shell

Sweet Almonds have been used for healing and food for centuries. In ancient times sweet almonds had been considered as a healing food. Ten Almonds are the equivalent to on half pound of meat in nutritions. In a survival situation, Almonds are small enough to carry with you and helpful enough to do so.

Six tablespoons of ground Almonds mixed in ½ pint of water will help with fevers and to overcome bronchial attacks. Invalids tolerate this drink well and therefore it is very helpful in healing a broken body. Almonds have NO cholesterol, are very low in sodium, low in sugar content, High in manganese and high in magnesium. Almonds not only for Cookies

Almonds are generally thought of as nuts one puts in cookies and cakes.

Almond infusions are very popular and generally highly thought off. You need to be careful though with this sort of infusion, it will also act as a laxative.

Almond oil is used for aroma therapy massages. It softens the skin and the senses in one massage. New research gives even more support to the healthy benefits of almonds: almonds may well be a food that helps fight obesity and diabetes.

Almonds are also known to lower blood cholesterol levels, although they have generally been thought of as one of the "FATTY" foods. 90% of the fat's in Almonds are unsaturated and with a high protein and fiber content, they are more helpful the harmful. A person with a high probability of Osteoporoses would do well to eat lots of Almonds to help prevent this affliction. Those innocent little brown nuts also are very helpful with blood pressure regulation.

New research have been done with Almond intake and weight loss. Almond's high level of satiety, (that is satisfaction or fullness from food,) are very helpful in a weight loss diet. Purdue University studies showed that adding nearly two servings of almonds to a person's diet did not cause them to gain weight or body fat at all, but rather led them to decrease their intake of calories from other sources of food.

In ancient times, Almonds had been considered a food that helps increase vitality, improve the complexion and help the body fight of the effects of drunkennes                                                                                                                                                              Lilyruths"This and that friendly cottage" Pets welcomed. Aspirin a Day, will it do you more harm then Good?

Some 43 million Americans do it every day: take a tiny aspirin to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. In fact, doctors have been routinely recommending the practice to older adults for years. But recently, experts have been questioning the aspirin-a-day regimen, concerned that this everyday miracle drug can pose serious risks, including bleeding in the brain and stomach.
The aspirin-a-day controversy erupted publicly in March when a 10-year study of nearly 30,000 adults ages 50 to 75 without known heart disease found that a daily aspirin didn’t offer any discernible protection. The group taking aspirin had cardiovascular disease at the same rate as those taking a placebo. Moreover, the study—published in the Journal of the American Medical Association—reported that taking a daily aspirin (100 mg) almost doubled the risk of dangerous internal bleeding.

And last year the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force—a panel of medical experts—issued new guidelines for patients, recommending only those at risk for heart attacks or strokes should take a daily aspirin. Risk factors include having high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, as well as being overweight.
The panel also recommended that people over 80 not take aspirin at all because of bleeding risk.
For the first time, the panel also broke down its advice by gender, recommending against daily aspirin use in women under 55 and men under 45.
Is it right for you?

So, should you take a daily aspirin or not? The answer is not quite as simple as doctors previously thought. Aspirin, they say, can still be a lifesaving drug, but it’s not for everyone.
For reasons researchers don’t fully understand, aspirin seems to provide different benefits for men and women.

In men, aspirin can prevent heart attacks but seems to have no effect on strokes, says Michael LeFevre, M.D., a member of the task force that wrote the new guidelines and a professor of family medicine at the University of Missouri. Conversely, he says, aspirin appears to help women avoid strokes but not heart attacks.
The new recommendations suggest that aspirin will be most beneficial to:
men between 45 and 79 who have a high risk for heart attacks;

women between 55 and 79 who are at high risk for strokes.
Drawbacks

Aspirin, which has been around for more than 100 years, is a cheap, easy, effective way to control pain and inflammation. In 1989, when a major study revealed that a small dose could reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by preventing blood clots, doctors began recommending that their older patients take a low dose of aspirin, 81 mg, every day.
“Aspirin is a lifesaving medicine in patients with established cardiovascular disease,” says Jeffrey Berger, M.D., a cardiologist at New York University who has studied the use of aspirin. But, he warns, it does come with some real drawbacks.
Aspirin has been linked with chronic ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and earlier this year scientists reported that people who took aspirin regularly were more likely to suffer from hearing loss.

Can We stop the Confusion and Friction in our lives

We all have experiences that bring friction into our life. We meet conditions or we associate with people who irritate us. But when we learn to think of personalities as a universal idea, an idea that can neither be destroyed, then the irritation ceases to annoy and upset us. The musicians in a great orchestra, in all probability annoy each other at many times and in many ways. But does that cause them to spoil a performance by not doing their best work? They cannot afford to let petty likes or dislikes separate them from the unisom which must come to the front when they play. Neither can we afford to live without a sense of harmony in all of our affairs. The problems we accept in our dailey lives are as devasting to happiness and progress as being out of tune is to a musical masterpiece. Sometimes we lose ourselves in confusion. We cannot see our way through to the right adjustments, the adjustment which we desire. So we begin to think that if it is impossible to change the conditions to our liking. When that is true, let us turn our thoughts to simple things in life that we enjoy, so that the friction may cease.

Tips on How to make your Hair grow faster

Q: Can I make my hair grow faster?

A: Realistically, no. But here are some hair-helper tips that certainly can't hurt. Give yourself at-home scalp massages, says L.A. stylist Philip B. They stimulate the blood flow to your scalp, which helps nutrients get to your hair follicles more quickly. While washing your hair, massage the scalp with your fingertips, starting at the back of the neck and moving around the hairline.

UCLA dermatologist Harold Lancer also suggests taking an over-the-counter vitamin every day that contains antioxidant blends and vitamin B derivatives to help increase hair strength. Dr. Lancer recommends the brand Marlan, available at most major drug stores.

FDA looks to curb abuse of cough medicine

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health regulators are weighing restrictions on Robitussin, NyQuil and other cough suppressants to curb cases of abuse that send thousands of people to the hospital each year.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday posted its review of dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in more than 100 over-the-counter medications that is sometimes abused for its euphoric effects. The practice, dubbed "robotripping," involves taking more than 25 times the recommended dose of a cold medicine and is mainly associated with teenagers.

At high doses the drug causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and fever. Abusers can also suffer side effects from other ingredients mixed in cough medicines, such as acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage.

"Because of the drug's perceived safety, ease of availability, and desired psychoactive effects, it is sought after by those seeking to alter their mental state," states the FDA review.

According to the FDA, inappropriate use of the ingredient was linked to nearly 8,000 emergency room visits in 2008. That was up more than 70 percent from reports in 2004.

An FDA analysis concluded that dextromethorphan is abused less often than the popular painkiller codeine but more often than pseudophedrine, a cold medicine ingredient that can be processed into methamphetamine.

The FDA has agreed to reconsider how it regulates the drug at the behest of the Drug Enforcement Agency, which has raised concerns about increasing abuse among adolescents.
On Sept. 14, the FDA will ask a panel of outside experts whether dextromethorphan should be available only as a prescription. The agency is not required to follow the group's advice, though it often does.

Mandating a prescription for the drug would deal a major blow to over-the-counter drug makers, which use the drug in dozens of combination cold medicines. Popular brands containing dextromethorphan include Wyeth's Dimetapp, Bayer's Alka Seltzer Flu Plus and Procter & Gamble's Vicks cough medicines. The drug is available in pills, gel caps, liquids and other forms.

Most industry observers don't expect the FDA to mandate a prescription on those products due to the enormous workload it would create for doctors and pharmacists.

One alternative could involve placing the drugs behind the counter, though the FDA's review did not discuss specific proposals.

The over-the-counter medicine industry supports prohibiting sales of the medicines to people under age 18. Such age restrictions require legal changes, and the industry's trade association has lobbied on the issue at the state and federal levels.

A spokeswoman for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association said the group has been working since 2003 to reduce abuse through educational campaigns targeting parents, teenagers and school nurses.

"It's really about trying to take this multifaceted approach to inform parents that while these medicines are safe and effective, they are also vulnerable to abuse," said spokeswoman Elizabeth Funderburk. The group represents Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and most other over-the-counter drug companies.

Chili pepper delivery spices up remote seed vault

Health News
July 12, 2010 12:41 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wenk's Yellow Hots, Pico de Gallos and the unpredictably hot San Juan "Tsiles" chili peppers have safely arrived at a "doomsday" vault in the Arctic.
Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., says he and other congressmen delivered seeds from the pepper varieties on Sunday to a Norwegian seed bank on the remote Svalbard archipelago.
Operators say the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has the world's most diverse repository of crop seeds and is a safeguard against war or natural disasters that could wipe out food crops.

The seeds came from a Department of Agriculture collection in Colorado. In addition to peppers, seeds for plants including peanuts and melons were sent to the vault.

Detecting Skin Cancer early can save your Life

                 Freckle, Mole, or Cancer?

Heather Fraelick

Gloucester, Massachusetts

Diagnosed with melanoma at 25

Recurrence at 27

Now healthy at 29

Heather Fraelick was 25 when she noticed the pink, raised spot on her right forearm. "It looked like a bug bite," she says, but when it bled and didn't seem to heal she went to the dermatologist. The bump didn't have the classic look of a melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer --but it was. "I was absolutely shocked, and I learned how deadly melanoma can be if it isn't caught early," she says. "It was much more invasive than I expected, which was really frightening." A surgeon removed the lesion as well as five lymph nodes under her arm. Luckily, all were cancer-free, which meant it hadn't spread.

Two years later, though, she noticed a tiny freckle on the scar. The melanoma had recurred, but the surgeon was able to successfully remove it. As an athlete who played sports for years without sunscreen and visited the tanning salon before her prom, Fraelick, now 29, has learned her lesson. Although she lives on the ocean in Gloucester, Massachusetts, she never goes outdoors without wearing protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen.

Lee Cavanaugh is glad she had a recurring blemish on her hairline checked out. "I was shocked that it was skin cancer because I was only 32," says the New York City interior designer. She had the basal-cell tumor removed surgically and now she's examined by her doctor every six months. "No more basking in the sun. I'm into sunless tanners now," she says.

Fraelick's and Cavanaugh's stories aren't rare. Doctors are seeing more and more skin cancer among people in their 20s and 30s. "When I was a resident, skin cancer wasn't a disease young people got," says James M. Spencer, MD, a dermatologist in St. Petersburg, Florida. "Now I see it in somebody every month." The rates in 40- and 50-year-olds continue to rise, too. He speculates that increased UV exposure is to blame. "Your grandmother didn't fly to Jamaica for a vacation, and she sure didn't go to a tanning salon, either," he adds.

No matter your age, skin color, or sun habits, early detection is key. Follow our guidelines for keeping an eye on your (and your family's) skin. Then make an appointment if anything seems vaguely suspicious. It could save your life!

Understanding Depression

                                                                     What causes depression?

The symptoms of depression are relatively universal: loss of interest in daily activities, difficulty sleeping or increased sleep, a sad or irritable mood, reduced or increased appetite, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, problems making decisions, feelings of worthlessness and guilt, and thoughts of suicide or death. Many people also experience physical symptoms such as body aches or increased sensitivity to pain. While the symptoms of depression are easily identifiable, the causes of depression can vary greatly.

Depressive symptoms can be caused by a medical condition, such as a thyroid disorder, or by external chemicals including medications, illegal drugs and alcohol. Sometimes hormonal changes, including those that occur during the week prior to menstruation or after the birth of a child, can create symptoms of depression. Other times, depressive symptoms can be caused by environmental factors such as reduced exposure to light or inability to access important physical, social, or reproductive resources.

Finally, there are depressive symptoms typically viewed as being caused by a mental health disorder. However, as you will read below, what we call now call depression is influenced by many factors and is not necessarily the result of a genetic disorder. While some symptoms of depression may be caused by genetic factors, other types depression are created by thinking patterns, lifestyle patterns and social factors.

What we can change and what we cannot:

There is a great deal you can change about your mood and a great deal you cannot. You cannot change the genetics that underlie your biological tendencies towards positive or negative moods. You can, however, choose to modify the chemicals present in your brain by getting regular exercise, taking medication, changing your diet, and by avoiding harmful substances such as illegal drugs or alcohol. Although your biology is relatively static, you can also change the way you choose to view the world, the meaning you give to negative feelings, how you spend your time, and the way you choose to interact in your social environment. All of these factors contribute to your emotional state and research suggests that it is possible not only to reduce feelings of depression, but actually increase the amount of positive emotion that you experience.

Weird Facts about Breasts

We men really do love breasts: we talk about them, brag about touching them and apparently now write extensive comedy articles about them for the internet. Many women might think it’s juvenile on our part to obsess so much over nothing more than a pair of meat sacks filled with fat, but there are many stories out there which support our collective theory that breasts are just plain awesome.
So sit back and relax, here are some weird facts about Breasts

Small KnockersAlmost Got Vietnamese Bikers Banned From the Roads

In 2008 the Vietnamese government was seriously considering banning all females whose chests measured less than 28 inches from riding their motorbikes on public roads. Allegedly this was a bid from the Ministry of Health aimed at making sure that the people behind the handlebars remain healthy, but it’s quite obvious that they were just trying to pressure the women into getting boob jobs.
If you have ever interacted with a Vietnamese person or saw one of those oriental X-rated movies on the adult You Tubes that everybody’s talking about, then you know that eastern Asian females don’t really carry around a pair of huge portable airbags on their chests. In that region small breasts are not the sign of sickness, they are the sign of (a little bit depressing and flat) normality, and it almost cost thousands of ladies the use of their Vespas.

In 2009 however, the proponents of this bill finally got smacked over the head by their wives and the idea died out.

Breasts Can Become Bigger Via a Cellphone RingtoneSpeaking of smaller breasts from East Asia, it somehow seems appropriate that the inventor of the first noninvasive breast augmentation procedure that probably works, hails from Japan. For a number of years now Dr. Hideto Tomabechi has been preoccupied with 2 things: sounds and breasts, and in 2008 he combined his 2 passions into the “Rock Melon” – a ringtone which supposedly causes titties to gain in size if you just listen to it

Dr. Tomabechi has designed the “Rock Melon” sound to carry with it a subliminal cry of an infant child, which allegedly works on a woman’s brain causing it to instinctively switch to motherhood mode, making her chest jugs fill with milk. After listening to the tone 20 times a day for a couple of days, one of the good doctor’s test subjects reported her breasts grew in size by almost an entire inch!

Sufficiently Big Melons Can Keep You Out of PrisonYou would think that the only way breasts could keep anyone from doing jail-time is if that person went back to the judge’s chambers and let him touch them for a couple of minutes. But luckily there are less sad examples of the twins providing legal representation in court, as was the case with Serena Kozakura.
In 2007 Serena Kozakura, 38, was convicted of property destruction after she allegedly kicked in the wooden doors to an unnamed man’s apartment and trashed it to hell. However, during a reenactment of the crime, Kozakura proved that the hole someone made in the door was way too small for her and her impressive 44-inch chest to crawl through.

Based on just that, the woman was acquitted. It’s probably safe to say she will never curse her massive knockers ever again after it turned out they are her own personal pair of top notch defense lawyers. Oh breasts, is there anything you cannot do?

Old Folks Remedies for Age Spots

                  What are age spots?

Age spots are also known as liver spots or sun spots, as well as lentigines. They are flat, yellow or brown discolorations of the skin. They usually occur on the neck, hands, and face in those people over the age of forty.

Age spots on the skin usually indicate there has been sun damage. They may also be caused by an impaired liver function, dietary and nutritional deficiencies. A lack of antioxidants in your diet may also play a role in the development of age spots.

It happens to the best of us, but don't despair, there are a few things that you can try in order to lighten, fade or perhaps get rid of age spots.

Remedies:

Apple Cider Vinegar and Onion Juice

Apple cider vinegar acts as an exfoliator and also helps to lighten age spots.

Mix one part apple cider vinegar and one part juice of a finely chopped or a blended onion. Using a cheese cloth or strainer, squeeze the onion in order to extract its juices. Mix together and using a cotton pad, apply directly to the age spots. You may repeat this daily for about six-weeks. If the spots don't disappear during this time, continue with the process until they do.

Aloe Vera:

Aloe Vera gel, juice, or pulp may be used on age spots as well. Simply apply to the spots twice a day. You should see improvement in about a month.

Lemon Juice:

Fresh lemon juice can be dabbed on the spot using a cotton ball twice a day. The lemon juice peels off the lower layer of skin, and in time should remove the age spot or at least lighten it. You should see results in six to eight weeks.

Other remedies:

Prepare a concoction of radish, lime juice, rosemary oil, and vinegar. Apply to age spots.

Make a mask consisting of rose water and Sandal powder. Apply, allow to dry, then wash the area clean.

Mix 1/8 teaspoon powdered gotu kola into a cup of herbal tea or hot water along with 1/8 teaspoon of ginseng and a pinch of cayenne. This should eliminate the age spots within a matter of a few days.

Make a mixture of olive oil and vinegar in equal parts. Apply one hour before you bathe.

Weird Old Folks Remedies

If you suffer from hemorrhoids, should you heed the advice of an old folk remedy and apply a banana peel to your painful posterior?
"A banana is going to be soothing because it contains slippery components that are starch-like materials," called polysaccharides, DerMarderosian advises. Bananas also contain a sugar that can be applied to topical infections because it has mild anti-microbial properties, he says.
So while applying a banana peel to hemorrhoids might seem ridiculous, it doesn't sound weird to a man who reviews scientific research on the use of leeches to stop bleeding and maggots to promote healing.
Indeed, there's a lot of wisdom in many folk remedies that has been forgotten over the years, DerMarderosian says. "Generally, Americans don't pay attention to history," he says. "They tend to forget anything that didn't happen last week."
Still, in recent years, Americans have become more interested in folk remedies, likely in rebellion against impersonal managed care and expensive, high-tech medicine. But many folk remedies still need to be verified, DerMarderosian cautions, and there isn't much medical research available.
DerMarderosian is a first-generation Armenian-American who has taught his college course on natural remedies in Philadelphia and elsewhere since the mid-1950s. He was inspired by his late grandfather, an Armenian native who worked as a pharmacist in Somerville, Mass., and spoke five languages, including Greek, Arabic, and Turkish. DerMarderosian grew up in the same house with his grandfather and observed him practice Old Country remedies from many cultures. "I thought everybody knew this stuff," he says.
He's seen interest in natural remedies wax and wane over the decades. For example, his college course was a requirement in the 1950s and '60s, but then interest declined, and the class became an elective. In the late 1980s, however, folk remedies came back in vogue. People are once again using a tablespoon of sugar to stop hiccups because sugar relaxes muscles, DerMarderosian says. And they are applying yogurt topically to benefit dry skin. Yogurt also has anti-microbial properties that, according to him, make it an effective treatment for yeast and other vaginal infections when used as a douche.
Today, the size of DerMarderosian's class has more than doubled over previous years, even though it's still an elective. The professor is happy to be back in style. He sees the influx of new immigrants -- many of whom still use the old remedies -- as one of the biggest reasons for the revival of interest in folk medicine. "In the Old Country, they still do these things," says DerMarderosian, who in 1998 was a consultant on "The Country Doctor's Book of Folk Remedies and Healing Wisdom," from Lincolnwood Publications. He's also an expert on ginseng and hallucinogenic botanicals, such as peyote, morning glory seeds, and mescal cactus.
The professor recalls stories about grandparents in the Old Country who treated children's fevers by sending them to bed wearing old socks stuffed with raw onions, believing they would draw out the heat. (While that use has not been scientifically established, onions and garlic do contain sulfur compounds that may fight infections, DerMarderosian says, and were used as crude antibiotics in World War I.)
Another old folk remedy involves putting a cobweb on a wound to dry it. It acts like cotton gauze, and hastens clotting, he says. And the ancient Egyptians definitely were ahead of their time: They applied molds to wounds long before penicillin was discovered.

If you think the banana peel treatment is weird, how about the use of leeches and maggots? Forms of hirudin -- a substance derived from leech saliva -- are used as anticoagulants. And maggots, DerMarderosian says, are useful in treating deep wounds because they eat dead tissue and secrete substances that promote healing. He knows of one doctor who has done extensive research on raising maggots for clinical use, and bills himself as "Dr. Maggot."
But don't expect U.S. scientists to be rushing into new research on old remedies like banana skins -- not unless they can patent their discoveries, DerMarderosian says. "I don't think anybody's ever done a clinical, double-blind study on it," he says. And he doubts anyone will.
