10 Things You Didn’t Know About Colds

A sniffle, a sneeze—you know all about the common cold, right? Or do you? We scoured the latest research and talked to experts to dig up the most surprising things you may not have known about catching and recovering from the common cold.

1. It takes about 48 hours to infect you and make you sick.

That scratchy throat and runny nose that’s coming on? Think back to where you were 48 hours ago. Chances are, that’s where you picked up your cold bug. Experts say that it takes about two days for a cold to embed into the lining of your cells and produce symptoms. Baffled by whether you've come down with the flu or with a cold? While no one can predict how an infection will progress—and sometimes even experts are fooled by colds masquerading as the flu—you can use this rule of thumb from Ron Eccles, BSc, PhD, DSc, director of the Common Cold Centre at Cardiff University in the U.K.: “Cold viruses do not usually cause fever in adults,” he says. “Sudden onset, fever and cough are the best predictors of influenza.”

2. The best cold-fighting weapon may be your tennis shoes.

Your medicine cabinet may be stocked with the latest cold-fighting medicines, but when it comes down to it, experts say the best way to protect yourself isn’t with a pill, but by breaking a sweat. Appalachian State University researchers have studied how the immune system and viruses are affected by exercise, and the findings are fascinating: Any exercise, however limited, is great. The researchers say that if you really want to ward off colds this winter, you’re best off working out at least 5 days per week—but no marathon-training is required. A brisk 30-minute walk 5 times per week does the trick to cold-proof your immune system. “Mild exercise is good as it moves the blood around the body and also moves the immune white cells around to search for infection,” says Dr. Eccles.

3. Late nights could be contributing to your sniffling and sneezing.

How much sleep did you get last night? If it was fewer than seven hours, you’re three times more likely to catch a cold, say researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, whose study was published in a recent issue of the journal Archives of Internal Medicine. It’s also important to use your time in bed wisely—meaning, when you're in bed, sleep. The researchers call it “sleep efficiency.” For instance, study participants who spent less than 92 percent of their time in bed asleep were at least five times more likely to pick up a cold virus than those who fell asleep quicker and stayed asleep longer. To get more shut-eye, sleep experts recommend banishing the TV as well as night lights, which can distract and impede your sleep cycles.

4. A tall glass of orange juice isn't a cold cure-all.

When you start to feel the first signs of a cold coming on, what do you do? If your first response is to load up on OJ in hopes of boosting your body’s vitamin C levels, you might reconsider. A major review of more than 30 studies conducted by researchers at Australian National University and the University of Helsinki say that for the majority of people, vitamin C does nothing to prevent or reduce the symptoms of a cold.

Disappointing, yes. But there’s a caveat. If you’re under a lot of stress, or are putting your body to the test—for example, training for a marathon—a daily dose of 200 mg of vitamin C may reduce your chances of catching a cold by about half. To get more C naturally, load up on these foods: oranges and citrus, of course, and also papaya, broccoli, tomatoes, red peppers and kiwi.

5. There’s a flower that may help fight cold viruses.

You’ve probably heard of echinacea, a plant with a stunning pink flower, which is believed to help boost the immune system. University of Connecticut researchers put the theory to the test recently, and after studying more than 1,600 people, they reported that not only did echinacea cut the chances of catching a cold in half, but also those study participants who took it reduced the duration of their colds by about 1.4 days.

Should you supplement with echinacea? It’s worth a try, says Dr. Eccles. "As it is a natural product, it is not possible to standardize the medicine, so, like buying wine, get the best quality from [herbal supplement makers] who have been in the business for a while.”

6. A cold virus could make you fat.

Could you blame that extra 15 pounds you’ve gained on the cold you got last spring? It may not be a far-fetched idea, according to researchers at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. In their study of children, published in a recent issue of the journal Pediatrics, they found that kids who had been infected by adenovirus 36, a common cold virus that causes typical cold symptoms and sometimes gastrointestinal issues, were, on average, 50 pounds heavier than children who hadn’t been infected by the strain, suggesting that a viral infection may cause excess weight gain. While researchers aren’t implying that all cold viruses—even this particular one—cause lifelong weight problems, it's some extra incentive to stay healthy this season, right?

7. Hot drinks can help zap the symptoms of cold viruses.

Your mom was right—tea and hot soup may be the keys to feeling better when you're hit with a bad cold. According to a study published in a recent issue of the journal Rhinology, researchers in England say that simply sipping a hot beverage can provide immediate and sustained relief from your worst cold symptoms, like coughing, sneezing, runny nose, sore throat and fatigue. The researchers tested hot beverages versus room-temperature drinks and found that the warmth in a cup had soothing, feel-good properties. Your new feel-better-fast remedy: herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon and one teaspoon of honey, which has also been proven to soothe sore throats.

8. An ingredient found in breast milk can make you feel better fast.

It turns out that an ingredient in breast milk (that you can find via supplements—whew!), may help your most intense cold go away. “A derivative of lauric acid, monolaurin, is a fatty acid found naturally in breast milk,” explains Tom Bayne, DC, a practitioner with ChicagoHealers.com. “It is known to decrease symptoms of the flu and fatigue.” You can find monolaurin supplements at any health food store or vitamin shop and at most pharmacies. As with all natural supplements, talk to your doctor about the right dosage and whether there are any drug contraindications to keep in mind.

9. The average person gets 200 colds in his or her lifetime.

According to estimates, by your 75th birthday, you’re likely to have suffered through 200 colds—that’s two years of your life sneezing! And while children typically get between four and eight colds per year, older people get a break from them. Experts believe this is due to the fact that most elderly people have already been exposed to the majority of cold viruses circulating. But, adds Dr. Eccles, a new virus can be devastating to the elderly, often manifesting in upper respiratory illness.

10. Colds are really not that contagious.

We hear so much about the dreaded rhinovirus that most people think a mere handshake with a sick person is going to send them coughing. Not true, say experts. Recent research by the Cardiff University Common Cold Centre found that when healthy people were put in a room with cold sufferers, it was “remarkably difficult” to spread the infection from one person to another. In fact, the cold virus has to have the ideal conditions when hitting your body to infect you. “Colds are not very contagious, and most colds are caught at home from kids and partners from prolonged and close contact,” says Dr. Eccles. In other words, no need to don a mask in public—just use common  sense.

Aspirin a Day, will it do you more harm then Good?

Some 43 million Americans do it every day: take a tiny aspirin to help prevent heart attacks and strokes. In fact, doctors have been routinely recommending the practice to older adults for years. But recently, experts have been questioning the aspirin-a-day regimen, concerned that this everyday miracle drug can pose serious risks, including bleeding in the brain and stomach.
The aspirin-a-day controversy erupted publicly in March when a 10-year study of nearly 30,000 adults ages 50 to 75 without known heart disease found that a daily aspirin didn’t offer any discernible protection. The group taking aspirin had cardiovascular disease at the same rate as those taking a placebo. Moreover, the study—published in the Journal of the American Medical Association—reported that taking a daily aspirin (100 mg) almost doubled the risk of dangerous internal bleeding.

And last year the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force—a panel of medical experts—issued new guidelines for patients, recommending only those at risk for heart attacks or strokes should take a daily aspirin. Risk factors include having high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, as well as being overweight.
The panel also recommended that people over 80 not take aspirin at all because of bleeding risk.
For the first time, the panel also broke down its advice by gender, recommending against daily aspirin use in women under 55 and men under 45.
Is it right for you?

So, should you take a daily aspirin or not? The answer is not quite as simple as doctors previously thought. Aspirin, they say, can still be a lifesaving drug, but it’s not for everyone.
For reasons researchers don’t fully understand, aspirin seems to provide different benefits for men and women.

In men, aspirin can prevent heart attacks but seems to have no effect on strokes, says Michael LeFevre, M.D., a member of the task force that wrote the new guidelines and a professor of family medicine at the University of Missouri. Conversely, he says, aspirin appears to help women avoid strokes but not heart attacks.
The new recommendations suggest that aspirin will be most beneficial to:
men between 45 and 79 who have a high risk for heart attacks;

women between 55 and 79 who are at high risk for strokes.
Drawbacks

Aspirin, which has been around for more than 100 years, is a cheap, easy, effective way to control pain and inflammation. In 1989, when a major study revealed that a small dose could reduce the risk of stroke and heart attack by preventing blood clots, doctors began recommending that their older patients take a low dose of aspirin, 81 mg, every day.
“Aspirin is a lifesaving medicine in patients with established cardiovascular disease,” says Jeffrey Berger, M.D., a cardiologist at New York University who has studied the use of aspirin. But, he warns, it does come with some real drawbacks.
Aspirin has been linked with chronic ringing in the ears (tinnitus), and earlier this year scientists reported that people who took aspirin regularly were more likely to suffer from hearing loss.

Tips on How to make your Hair grow faster

Q: Can I make my hair grow faster?

A: Realistically, no. But here are some hair-helper tips that certainly can't hurt. Give yourself at-home scalp massages, says L.A. stylist Philip B. They stimulate the blood flow to your scalp, which helps nutrients get to your hair follicles more quickly. While washing your hair, massage the scalp with your fingertips, starting at the back of the neck and moving around the hairline.

UCLA dermatologist Harold Lancer also suggests taking an over-the-counter vitamin every day that contains antioxidant blends and vitamin B derivatives to help increase hair strength. Dr. Lancer recommends the brand Marlan, available at most major drug stores.

FDA looks to curb abuse of cough medicine

WASHINGTON (AP) — Federal health regulators are weighing restrictions on Robitussin, NyQuil and other cough suppressants to curb cases of abuse that send thousands of people to the hospital each year.

The Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday posted its review of dextromethorphan, an ingredient found in more than 100 over-the-counter medications that is sometimes abused for its euphoric effects. The practice, dubbed "robotripping," involves taking more than 25 times the recommended dose of a cold medicine and is mainly associated with teenagers.

At high doses the drug causes increased blood pressure, heart rate and fever. Abusers can also suffer side effects from other ingredients mixed in cough medicines, such as acetaminophen, which can cause liver damage.

"Because of the drug's perceived safety, ease of availability, and desired psychoactive effects, it is sought after by those seeking to alter their mental state," states the FDA review.

According to the FDA, inappropriate use of the ingredient was linked to nearly 8,000 emergency room visits in 2008. That was up more than 70 percent from reports in 2004.

An FDA analysis concluded that dextromethorphan is abused less often than the popular painkiller codeine but more often than pseudophedrine, a cold medicine ingredient that can be processed into methamphetamine.

The FDA has agreed to reconsider how it regulates the drug at the behest of the Drug Enforcement Agency, which has raised concerns about increasing abuse among adolescents.
On Sept. 14, the FDA will ask a panel of outside experts whether dextromethorphan should be available only as a prescription. The agency is not required to follow the group's advice, though it often does.

Mandating a prescription for the drug would deal a major blow to over-the-counter drug makers, which use the drug in dozens of combination cold medicines. Popular brands containing dextromethorphan include Wyeth's Dimetapp, Bayer's Alka Seltzer Flu Plus and Procter & Gamble's Vicks cough medicines. The drug is available in pills, gel caps, liquids and other forms.

Most industry observers don't expect the FDA to mandate a prescription on those products due to the enormous workload it would create for doctors and pharmacists.

One alternative could involve placing the drugs behind the counter, though the FDA's review did not discuss specific proposals.

The over-the-counter medicine industry supports prohibiting sales of the medicines to people under age 18. Such age restrictions require legal changes, and the industry's trade association has lobbied on the issue at the state and federal levels.

A spokeswoman for the Consumer Healthcare Products Association said the group has been working since 2003 to reduce abuse through educational campaigns targeting parents, teenagers and school nurses.

"It's really about trying to take this multifaceted approach to inform parents that while these medicines are safe and effective, they are also vulnerable to abuse," said spokeswoman Elizabeth Funderburk. The group represents Pfizer, Johnson & Johnson and most other over-the-counter drug companies.

Lice Home Remedy

Mayonnaise lice home remedy seems so simple that it is actually not used often although it is a shame: it works wonders! Seems like this is the time of year that most of our kids get lice in their heads, usually they catch these lice from other children at school.. This home remedy can be very useful..

Before you hear about mayonnaise lice home remedy, it is important to know a bit about lice. These nasty little creatures love humans and are especially fond of warm areas of the neck and head. Since they like blood, they try to stay as close to the scalp as possible. And because they use six legs to attach themselves firmly, it can be really difficult to detach them.

The female head lice lay eggs (nits) whose colors range from white to gray. Because they camouflage themselves so well, if your hair is brown and your hair is infested with gray lice, removing them is a pain! Same thing with white ones if your hair is blond. Once the incubation period is over, nits turn into baby nymphs and then to lice.

Why is this important for mayonnaise lice home remedy? 2 reasons: 1) Mayonnaise smothers lice and 2) makes it easy to remove nits (usually the most painstaking process of all).

What do you need to make mayonnaise lice home remedy?

A jar of regular mayonnaise.

How to apply it?

Scoop out as much mayonnaise as you need to cover the scalp and the hair thoroughly. Apply it liberally. When all the hairs and scalp are covered, you can place a clear plastic bag over your hair so the mayo doesn’t drip. Leave it on for a couple of hours.

Use a regular shampoo to rinse the hair off. It might take several application of shampoo to remove the mayonnaise lice remedy. When done, using a fine tooth comb, comb the hair until you get all the nits and lice out.

Another recipe I know of calls for adding apple cider vinegar to the mayo. I know of vinegar as a good lice remedy in a different recipe but don’t see why you shouldn’t try it mixed with mayo.

When making a mayonnaise lice remedy, be persistent. Lice are indeed tedious to get rid of, but this recipe offers an alternative to chemicals-filled commercial shampoos available.

Chili pepper delivery spices up remote seed vault

Health News
July 12, 2010 12:41 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wenk's Yellow Hots, Pico de Gallos and the unpredictably hot San Juan "Tsiles" chili peppers have safely arrived at a "doomsday" vault in the Arctic.
Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., says he and other congressmen delivered seeds from the pepper varieties on Sunday to a Norwegian seed bank on the remote Svalbard archipelago.
Operators say the Svalbard Global Seed Vault has the world's most diverse repository of crop seeds and is a safeguard against war or natural disasters that could wipe out food crops.

The seeds came from a Department of Agriculture collection in Colorado. In addition to peppers, seeds for plants including peanuts and melons were sent to the vault.

They're Better Than the "Hair of the Dog that Bit You!"

So, you've had a few too many alcoholic drinks and you're feeling kind of woozy. That's because, once it's consumed, alcohol is quickly dispersed into a person's bloodstream. It then travels throughout the entire body. Drinking too much alcohol can cause slurred speech, blurry vision, difficulty in walking, slow reactions, impaired judgment, and many other side effects. Now, you need homemade cures for a hangover.

One of the most popular cures for a hangover is to drink hot, black, caffeinated coffee. The caffeine will actually help dull a pounding headache. It will also rev up your body and work with the alcohol to further dehydrate it. Instead of drinking black coffee for your hangover, try drinking a large glass of fruit juice instead. The sugar content in fruit juice will aid in your body's attempt to get rid of the alcohol. Fruit drinks also contain Vitamin C. Vitamin C is an anti-oxidant that will also do the same job.

Since alcohol actually dehydrates your body, one of the best homemade cures for a hangover is to simply drink plenty of water. Water will not, as it's believed, make you feel drunk again. Instead, water will rehydrate your body and help flush the alcohol and other toxins out of your system faster.

Some people recommend drinking Gatorade(TM) or Pedialyte(TM) instead of plain water. The Gatorade contains sodium which will help get your body hydrated again. Pedialyte contains electrolytes. Your body needs electrolytes in order to maintain cell impulses.

If your stomach can tolerate it, another of the most efficient homemade cures for a hangover is to eat a good, healthy meal. Lean steak, eggs, toast, and hash browns can help cure the typical hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, that drinking too much alcohol can cause. A good meal can also help replenish valuable vitamins and minerals that your body needs.

Stay away from fatty or fried foods. They can easily upset your already-nauseated stomach. Not only that, but your liver is already trying to rid your body of the alcohol. It doesn't need fatty or fried foods to deal with on top of that. Source:  Kassidy Emmerson

Detecting Skin Cancer early can save your Life

                 Freckle, Mole, or Cancer?

Heather Fraelick

Gloucester, Massachusetts

Diagnosed with melanoma at 25

Recurrence at 27

Now healthy at 29

Heather Fraelick was 25 when she noticed the pink, raised spot on her right forearm. "It looked like a bug bite," she says, but when it bled and didn't seem to heal she went to the dermatologist. The bump didn't have the classic look of a melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer --but it was. "I was absolutely shocked, and I learned how deadly melanoma can be if it isn't caught early," she says. "It was much more invasive than I expected, which was really frightening." A surgeon removed the lesion as well as five lymph nodes under her arm. Luckily, all were cancer-free, which meant it hadn't spread.

Two years later, though, she noticed a tiny freckle on the scar. The melanoma had recurred, but the surgeon was able to successfully remove it. As an athlete who played sports for years without sunscreen and visited the tanning salon before her prom, Fraelick, now 29, has learned her lesson. Although she lives on the ocean in Gloucester, Massachusetts, she never goes outdoors without wearing protective clothing and plenty of sunscreen.

Lee Cavanaugh is glad she had a recurring blemish on her hairline checked out. "I was shocked that it was skin cancer because I was only 32," says the New York City interior designer. She had the basal-cell tumor removed surgically and now she's examined by her doctor every six months. "No more basking in the sun. I'm into sunless tanners now," she says.

Fraelick's and Cavanaugh's stories aren't rare. Doctors are seeing more and more skin cancer among people in their 20s and 30s. "When I was a resident, skin cancer wasn't a disease young people got," says James M. Spencer, MD, a dermatologist in St. Petersburg, Florida. "Now I see it in somebody every month." The rates in 40- and 50-year-olds continue to rise, too. He speculates that increased UV exposure is to blame. "Your grandmother didn't fly to Jamaica for a vacation, and she sure didn't go to a tanning salon, either," he adds.

No matter your age, skin color, or sun habits, early detection is key. Follow our guidelines for keeping an eye on your (and your family's) skin. Then make an appointment if anything seems vaguely suspicious. It could save your life!

Isle of Wight woman died from eating fatal mushrooms

Kannika and Paul Tuckey picked the mushrooms which grew wild

A woman died after eating death cap fungi she mistook for edible mushrooms, an inquest has heard.

Amphon Tuckey, 39, was pronounced dead at her home address in Carisbrooke High Street, in Newport, Isle of Wight, in September 2008.

The Thai national, known as Juny, had eaten the mushrooms, picked at Ventnor Botanic Gardens, at the Newport home of her niece and nephew.

The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Liver damage

Newport Coroner's Court heard that Kannika Tuckey, known as Pern, and her husband Paul Tuckey, picked the mushrooms and then invited Juny, who was married to Paul's brother Michael, to eat them.

Pern also became seriously ill with liver damage after eating a small amount of the mushrooms and spent several weeks in hospital.

She told the inquest she had been anxious about trying the mushrooms but had been reassured when her aunt ate them.

Juny had joked that if the mushrooms were poisonous then "they would both die together", she said.

The hearing heard Juny initially ate a very small amount of the mushrooms and waited for five minutes to see if they had any adverse effect.

She believed that if the mushrooms, which resembled ones she ate in her native Thailand, were poisonous they would turn the rice a different colour.

Juny then cooked the mushrooms in a herb sauce and ate most of them herself, with Pern only eating three or four.

Raw pork sausage

The inquest heard both women fell ill in the early hours of the next morning with Juny suffering severe vomiting and diarrhoea.

An ambulance was called but when Juny was asked what she had eaten she never mentioned the mushrooms and only said she had eaten a raw pork sausage - a Thai speciality.

Death cap mushrooms contain a poison which attacks the liver and kidneys

Her GP visited the next morning and diagnosed gastroenteritis. She told him she had eaten mushrooms but that they were ones that she had eaten before.

Michael told the inquest he had warned her against eating wild mushrooms.

He said said he thought she had not told him about the mushrooms because she "knew I would be angry".

Juny's condition deteriorated and she died the next night with her husband by her side.

Toxicology tests showed she died of poisoning caused by eating the death cap mushrooms.

Isle of Wight Coroner John Matthews said it was "unfortunate" Juny had not told paramedics that she had eaten the mushrooms, but said no medical intervention could have saved her life.

"They all thought at the time she had a case of gastroenteritis and that the patient should recover," he said.

The inquest heard that half a cap of a death cap mushroom was enough to kill a human.

He said the death cap mushrooms, which are common throughout the UK, could easily have been mistaken for common field mushrooms.

Kitchen Remedies for Grey Hair

"The only thing to do with gray hair is to admire it." This is true. Nothing so sets off an aged face like the crown of silver. To color it is a great mistake. There is absolutely no cure for it; the one thing we can do is to make it a beauty. Gray hair is due to the exhaustion of the pigment or coloring cells of the hair, supposed to be occasioned by the lack of a regular supply of blood.

For the progressive whitening of the hair due to the advance of age, curative agents are rarely of any avail, especially if the trouble is hereditary. Not that gray hair and baldness are handed down from father to son, but that the peculiarities of constitution which produce them are inherent in both. Nervousness, neuralgia, a low physical condition, aid the falling and blanching of the hair, and the victim should build up the general system. Preparations of iron and sulphur, taken internally, are supposed to supply certain elements of growth and pigment-forming power to the hair.

A solution of iron for external application to the hair, calls for two drams each of citrate of iron and tincture of nux vomica, and one and one-half ounces each of cocoanut oil and bay rum. It may be mentioned here, that faithfulness in treatment means even more than the tonic applied. To gain any real benefit, one must be persistent in application.

Hair often turns gray "in streaks" to the chagrin of the victim. Or it whitens above the forehead and temples and remains dark at the back. Nothing can be done for this.

Gray hair should be kept scrupulously clean, and requires more frequent washing than hair that holds its color. A very little blueing in the rinsing water gives a purer, clearer white. For this use indigo, not the usual washing fluid which is made of Prussian blue. Five cents worth of indigo will last a lifetime.

Weird Remedies - Want to stink like a skunk or a rotten tomato

I know you all have heard about that ole weird remedy that if a skunk sprays you that your bet remedey to rome that stinky odor is to bathe in tomato juice ! Wel it does work. Id rather smell like a rotten tomato then  a rotten skunk....Tomato Juice To Remove Rotten Odors

The first time I heard of tomato juice being used as a "hair remedy" it was on the Jerry Seined Show. Elaine and her hair had fallen victim to a persistent smell that was beyond horrible. After trying just about everything to remove the odor, Elaine was subjected to the "tomato juice" treatment.

Depending on how bad the odor, you can either pour undiluted tomato juice on the hair and let it soak into the hair for 10-15 minutes, or you can dilute 1 part tomato juice to 10 parts water.

If All Else Fails: Vinegar Will Probably Do The Trick

Dire measures call for dire treatments. If your hair has soaked up an odor that the tomato juice won't remove, you can apply 1 part apple cider vinegar to 10 parts of spring water. Pour carefully through the hair. Make sure to avoid the eye area.

Do not rinse with water or the odor may return. Instead, let the vinegar dry on the hair. Wait at least 6 hours, overnight is preferred, and then shampoo and completely rinse the hair. If the odor remains, repeat again. Now I know this is a weird remedey  but at times some of these old folks remedies do work.

Octuplets mother defends accused fertility doctor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Octuplets mother Nadya Suleman on Tuesday defended the fertility doctor who helped her conceive 14 children, saying in a video posted to RadarOnline.com that he did "absolutely nothing wrong.
The California Medical Board on Monday accused Suleman's Beverly Hills fertility doctor, Michael Kamrava, of gross negligence in three instances: transferring too many embryos, repeatedly transferring fresh embryos when frozen ones were available and failing to refer her for a mental health evaluatio
The board could revoke or suspend his license
Suleman, who already had six other children, gave birth to the world's longest-living set of octuplets on Jan. 26. She has said she underwent the in vitro treatment that bore octuplets because she didn't want her frozen embryos to go to waste.
But the medical board alleges that Kamrava never used frozen embryos in any of her pregnancies, putting her health at increased risk.
Kamrava's lawyer, Peter Osinoff, said Monday that Suleman requested fresh embryos be used to improve her chances of success in each pregnancy. He could not immediately be reached Tuesday.
Suleman refuted those allegations in the video Tuesday saying that Kamrava told her he transferred whatever was left of the frozen embryos.
Seeming to have second thoughts, Suleman added she may have signed papers she hadn't read.
"Maybe that was my negligence," she said.
Though Suleman has also pledged to stop having children, she seemed to joke with Radar that Kamrava losing his license would curb her ability to have more babies.
"What am I going to do if I ever in the future want to go back?" she said with a laugh. "Really, what am I going to do?"
Suleman has said she earns money for her children through her exposure in tabloid media. It's unclear whether she received payment for RadarOnline's video Tuesday. Queries to the editor were not immediately returned.
At one point Suleman had a secret, exclusive deal with the Web site to document her and her babies in exchange for an undisclosed sum. The deal became public when state labor authorities cited the Web site for videotaping the babies too late in the day and for too many hours.
Kamrava is also accused of giving Suleman too much of a hormone while stimulating in vitro fertilization, poor record keeping and failing to recognize that Suleman's conduct was placing her offspring at risk.
Kamrava's attorney said Monday that the doctor wants to continue practicing medicine                                                                                                                                                          Lilyruths"This and that friendly cottage" Pets welcomed. US lifts HIV/Aids immigration ban

President Obama wants the US to be a world leader on HIV research

The US has lifted a 22-year immigration ban which has stopped anyone with HIV/Aids from entering the country.
President Obama said the ban was not compatible with US plans to be a leader in the fight against the disease.
The new rules come into force on Monday and the US plans to host a bi-annual global HIV/Aids summit for the first time in 2012.
The ban was imposed at the height of a global panic about the disease at the end of the 1980s.
It put the US in a group of just 12 countries, also including Libya and Saudi Arabia, that excluded anyone suffering from HIV/Aids.
The BBC's Charles Scanlon, in Miami, says that improving treatments and evolving public perceptions have helped to bring about the change.
Rachel Tiven, head of the campaign group Immigration Equality, told the BBC that the step was long overdue.
"The 2012 World Aids Conference, due to be held in the United States, was in jeopardy as a result of the restrictions. It's now likely to go ahead as planned," she said.
In October, President Obama said the entry ban had been "rooted in fear rather than fact".
He said: "We lead the world when it comes to helping stem the Aids pandemic - yet we are one of only a dozen countries that still bar people with HIV from entering our own country."

Do you have Bipolar disorder? Read this and find out what it is

Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a

person's mood, energy and ability to function. Unlike the

common highs and lows everyone experiences, the mood swings of bipolar disorder are severe—untreated, they can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide. However, the illness can be treated, and people diagnosed with bipolar disorder can lead full, productive lives.

Bipolar disorder is characterized by an alternating pattern of dramatic mood swings—from overly "high" and/or irritable (mania) to sad and hopeless (depression), often with periods of normal mood in between. The intensity of the signs and symptoms vary, but severe changes in energy and behavior go along with these mood changes, called episodes.

The cause of bipolar disorder is unknown, but doctors and researchers have concluded that a variety of biologic, genetic and environmental factors seem to be involved in causing and triggering episodes of the illness.

Evidence indicates that abnormalities in the chemical messengers between nerve cells in the brain (neurotransmitters) occur in people who have bipolar disorder. This results in the person being more vulnerable to emotional and physical stresses. In many cases, people with a bipolar disorder may have a genetic disposition for the illness—however, not everyone with a family member who has bipolar disorder will develop the disease. Factors such as drug abuse and stressful or psychologically traumatic events may also contribute to or trigger episodes of the disorder.
About 5.7 million adults in the United States, age 18 and older, have bipolar disorder. While the disease typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood, some people have their first symptoms during childhood and others develop them late in life. Often not recognized as an illness, people may be affected by the bipolar disorder for years before being properly diagnosed and treated. Like other chronic diseases, bipolar disorder is a chronic illness that must be carefully managed throughout a person's life.

Swine Flu: How to prepare for the second Wave

Swine flu: how to prepare for the second wave The Influenza A (H1N1) "swine flu" virus that first appeared in Mexico in May has spread through most western countries. Health authorities now expect a second wave to sweep across the world this coming autumn. Here's what you need to know. By FRANCE 24 (text)

Influenza A (H1N1) is now so widespread that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has stopped counting the number of cases on a country by country basis. The danger now is that the virus could mutate into a deadlier strain, according to the UN, which has warned of a second wave of the virus in the northern hemisphere and in tropical regions and a much higher number of infections.

WHO urges governments to prepare for second flu wave
Symptoms
For the moment the symptoms are fairly mild and the same as those of seasonal flu, affecting the respiratory system (coughing and difficulty breathing) and causing high temperature, fatigue and muscle pain. Many may catch the virus without actually showing any of the symptoms.

Vulnerable groups
Pregnant women, especially in the later stages of pregnancy, are particularly vulnerable and any fever with associated respiratory problems should be considered a medical emergency.
Children, the chronically ill and health workers, who are more exposed to the virus, are also more vulnerable.
The elderly are less at risk because of a similar virus that swept the world in 1948-1950.
Vaccines
The Chinese government has recently approved production of a vaccine made by Sinovac China. New vaccines may cause unexpected side effects and will be closely monitored. The French medicines agency (AFSSAPS) has said it will publish a website for people to report these side effects.
The WHO also recommends Tamiflu, which can be used as a preventive in case of exposure to the virus. Manufacturers Roche had a stock of 100 million courses of the drug in March in preparation of a new influenza outbreak. As of December the company plans to increase its stock by 33 million per month or 400 million per year.
Prevention
The best way to avoid getting the virus is to pay attention to personal hygiene and to use common sense. Washing hands regularly with soap or with alcohol-based cleansers, using handkerchiefs for coughs and sneezes and making sure homes are well ventilated are the best means to control the spread of the virus.
For more information
Many health ministries and NGOs have published advice on their websites. These include the WHO and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.
The Internet has a huge amount of information, including Google Maps which can show the location of H1N1 cases by country. Google has also launched Google Flu Trends to follow flu epidemics, including the current one.
Other diverse initiatives around Influenza A (H1N1)
- Apple has launched an iPhone application to track real-time development of global disease pandemics, including Influenza A(H1N1). Called, "Outbreak Near Me", it was developed by researchers at Children's Hospital Boston and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with the support of Google.org, the philanthropic arm of the Internet giant.
- Some sites have games based on the spread of global pandemics.
- The Archbishop of Naples has forbidden the faithful from kissing a vial said to contain the blood of St Januarius in a ritual that takes place every year on September 19 in order to limit the spread of infections.
- The US department of health has organised a competition to find the most effective way of warning people about the virus. Among the seven finalists is Dr Clarke, rapping about the risks.

Latinos Are Most Stressed!

I was shocked to read a new survey just out by The American Psychological Association stating that the most stressed out population in the nation are Latinos.
Marisa Treviño of “Hispanic Trending” wrote a very informative article about the new study in which she states:
“The American Psychological Association (APA) released their annual Stress in America survey and the findings are not good for Latino adults
Of all adults, Latinos are recorded as experiencing the highest levels of stress. Fifty percent of Latino adults reported to survey finders that stress has increased in their lives versus last year when only 44% reported having stress — the national average is 42%.
And just what are Latinos stressing out about more than blacks and Anglos?

The Ten Riskiest Foods

WASHINGTON—Leafy greens, eggs, and tuna are on the top of a list of the 10 riskiest foods regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Those and seven other foods account for nearly 40 percent of all foodborne outbreaks linked to FDA-regulated food. That's no reason to forgo the occasional salad Niçoise, says the Center for Science in the Public Interest, which authored the report, nor need one pass up tomatoes, sprouts, and berries, even though those foods are also on the list. But the nonprofit watchdog group says the presence of so many healthy foods on such a list is exactly why the United States Senate should follow the House and pass legislation that reforms our fossilized food safety laws.
The FDA is responsible for regulating produce, seafood, egg and dairy products, as well as typical packaged foods such as cookie dough and peanut butter—nearly 80 percent of the food supply. More than 1,500 separate, definable outbreaks were associated with the top 10 riskiest FDA-regulated foods, causing nearly 50,000 reported illnesses. Since most foodborne illnesses are never reported, these outbreaks are only the tip of a large, hulking iceberg.

"Outbreaks give the best evidence of where and when the food safety system is failing to protect the public," said CSPI staff attorney Sarah Klein, the lead author of the report. "It is clearly time for FDA's reliance on industry self-regulation to come to an end. The absence of safety plans or frequent inspections unfortunately means that some of our favorite and most healthful foods also top the list of the most risky."

CSPI identified 363 outbreaks linked to iceberg lettuce, romaine, spinach, and other leafy greens, variously contaminated with E. coli, Norovirus, or Salmonella, and causing 13,568 cases of illness. Manure, contaminated irrigation water, or poor handling practices are all possible culprits in those outbreaks. The FDA does not currently require farms and processors to have written food safety plans, nor does it provide specific safety standards for even the largest growers to meet.

Eggs were linked 352 outbreaks and 11,163 illnesses; tuna to 268 outbreaks and 2,341 cases of illness, and oysters—despite their limited consumption—to 132 outbreaks causing 3,409 illnesses. Outbreaks involving potatoes don’t seem to make headlines, but nevertheless they are linked to 108 outbreaks and 3,659 cases of illness. Cheese, ice cream, tomatoes, sprouts, and berries round out the top 10 list. The data come from CSPI's Outbreak Alert! Database, which includes outbreaks from 1990 to 2006, using data collected from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and other sources.

In July, the House of Representatives passed the Food Safety Enhancement Act with broad, bipartisan support. That measure would give FDA authority to require food processors to design and implement food safety plans, provide specific safety standards that growers would have to meet, and require FDA to visit high-risk facilities every 12 months or less, and most other facilities every 3-4 years. In the Senate, similar legislation, sponsored by Sen. Richard Durbin (D-IL), is pending.

"As consumers, we don't have the power to check on these products," said Kathleen Chrismer, whose 9-year-old daughter Rylee Gustafson was hospitalized for a month after becoming seriously ill from eating spinach salad contaminated with E. coli O157:H7. "Without a better system to protect us, we are totally at the mercy of the next outbreak."

Depressed and Pregnant? Flu Shot May Be Needed

Symptoms of seasonal flu could be severe in this group of women, study finds.
(HealthDay News) -- Pregnant women who are depressed may suffer severe symptoms if they catch seasonal flu, a new study suggests.
Ohio State University researchers assessed depressive symptoms and took blood samples from 22 pregnant women before they received a seasonal flu shot. Those with significant symptoms of depression had a stronger inflammatory response to the flu shot than the other women.

This finding suggests that a depressed pregnant woman's immune system doesn't function normally, which means they may experience more serious symptoms if they're infected with seasonal flu.
"Inflammatory responses to vaccination do no harm, are mild, and typically go away within a few days. But an extended inflammatory response to vaccination, such as the one seen in women with the most depressive symptoms, isn't expected, and it serves as a way to estimate how somebody might respond to an actual infection or illness," lead author Lisa Christian, an assistant professor of psychiatry, said in a university news release.
The researchers said their study shows the need for pregnant women to get seasonal flu shots. The study was published online in advance of publication in the November print issue of the journal Brain, Behavior, and Immunity.

Public health groups advise pregnant women to get seasonal flu shots, but only 12 percent to 13 percent of them have done so in recent years, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

"It will be interesting to see how that might change this year," in light of CDC recommendations that pregnant women receive both seasonal and H1N1 flu vaccinations, Christian said.
