Suspected witches are burned, forced to eat excreta, hacked to death or banished from their homes never to see their families again. Even children are not spared. But who decides that one is a witch or has the potentials of becoming one? The witch doctor who is a self-proclaimed witch smeller!
The witch doctor holds an exalted position in the community and holds sway over his fiefdom with his rituals. They ‘smell-out” the suspects and look for ‘evidences” and force them to confess and identify other witches. Evidences may happen to be an innocent record with names of people in it, bones, stones, candles, snuff, and potions. They determine if these have been used for witchcraft – by performing rituals.
Tortured, the hapless suspects are forced to point out other “witches,” hoping to be spared, but no pardon is granted. Whether they confess or not, they are doomed, including the “unsuspecting” innocent villagers. Once the list is drawn, all is lost and the carnage begins. More than 23,000 “witches” in South Africa have been lynched and the number is still rising.
Come to think of it, the witch doctor does the very same thing a village witch does. Only he or she has been “trained” for the vocation. They dress in appointed ancestral colors, dispense advice, concoct unguents and brews for healing, and offer sacrifices to appease the spirits. They are also in-demand to find husbands and reverse fortunes. Thus, the witch doctor assumes a powerful hold over the community. .

Genetic Link to Cigarette Addiction

WASHINGTON - Scientists have pinpointed genetic variations that make people more likely to get hooked on cigarettes and more prone to develop lung cancer - a finding that could someday lead to screening tests and customized treatments for smokers trying to kick the habit.

The discovery by three separate teams of scientists makes the strongest case so far for the biological underpinnings of nicotine addiction and sheds more light on how genetics and lifestyle habits join forces to cause cancer.

"This is kind of a double whammy gene," said Christopher Amos, a professor of epidemiology at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and author of one of the studies. "It also makes you more likely to be dependent on smoking and less likely to quit smoking."

A smoker who inherits these genetic variations from both parents has an 80 percent greater chance of lung cancer than a smoker without the variants, the researchers reported. And that same smoker on average lights up two extra cigarettes a day and has a much harder time quitting than smokers who don't have these genetic differences.

The researchers disagreed on whether the variants directly increased the risk of lung cancer or did so indirectly, by causing more smoking.

The three studies, funded by governments in the U.S. and Europe, is being published Thursday in the journals Nature and Nature Genetics.

The scientists studied the genes of more than 35,000 people in Europe, Canada and the United States. They aren't quite sure if what they found is a set of variations in one gene or in three closely connected genes.

The gene variations, which govern nicotine receptors on cells, could eventually help explain some of the mysteries of chain smoking, nicotine addiction and lung cancer. These oddities include why there are 90-year-old smokers who don't get cancer and people who light up an occasional cigarette and don't get hooked.

"This is really telling us that the vulnerability to smoking and how much you smoke is clearly biologically based," said psychiatry professor Dr. Laura Bierut of Washington University in St. Louis, a genetics and smoking expert who did not take part in the studies. She praised the research as "very intriguing."

The smoking rate among U.S. adults has dropped from 42 percent in 1965 to less than 21 percent now.

The new studies are surprising in that they point to areas of the genetic code that are not associated with pleasure and the rewards of addiction.

That may help explain why some people can quit and others fail, said Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute of Drug Abuse in Bethesda, Md., which funded one of the studies.

"It opens our eyes," Volkow said Wednesday. "Not everyone takes drugs for the same reason. Not everyone smokes cigarettes for the same reasons."

One clue is in the location of the just-discovered variants, on the long arm of chromosome 15, Volkow said. It is in an area that, when damaged during tests on animals, makes them depressed and anxious. While some people smoke because it helps them focus or gives them a physiological reward, others do it to stave off depression.

That suggests that adding antidepressants to some smokers' treatment could help them kick the habit.

Bierut said a simple, inexpensive test could be developed to screen people for the variants. Kari Stefansson, lead author of the largest of the three studies, agreed. He is chief executive of deCode Genetics of Iceland, which already does prostate cancer genetic tests.

Such testing could carry risks all its own, bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania warned. People who have been found to have a genetic predisposition to addiction and lung cancer could find it harder to get health or life insurance, or their employer might drop their coverage, he said.

"The good news is that getting these risk estimates will help focus anti-smoking campaigns, and some people will want to voluntarily get into anti-addiction programs early, where they will probably work better," Caplan said in an e-mail. But if such testing is done, it should be voluntary, and the results should be kept private, he said.

The research involved only white people of European descent. Blacks and Asians will be studied soon and may yield quite different results, scientists said.

Smoking-related diseases worldwide kill about one in 10 adults, according to the World Health Organization.

Among the findings:

- Smokers who get the set of variants from only one parent see a risk of lung cancer that is about one-third higher than that of people without the variants. They also smoke about one more cigarette a day on average than other smokers. This group makes up about 45 percent of the population studied.

- Smokers who inherit the variants from both parents have nearly a 1-in-4 chance of developing lung cancer. Their cancer risk is 70 to 80 percent higher than that of smokers without the genetic variants. They smoke on average two extra cigarettes a day. This group accounts for about one in nine people of European descent.

- Smokers who don't have the variants are still more than 10 times more likely to get lung cancer than nonsmokers. Smokers without the variant have about a 14 percent risk of getting lung cancer. The risk of lung cancer for people who have never smoked is less than 1 percent, said another study author, Paul Brennan of the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon, France.

Brennan and Amos, working on different teams, linked the genetic variation itself - when triggered by smoking - directly to lung cancer. Brennan said the nicotine receptors that the variants act on also can stimulate tumor growth.

But Stefansson said the increased lung cancer risk was indirect - the variants led to more smoking, which led to more cancer.

For Stefansson, the research hits home. His father, a smoker, died of lung cancer. And Stefansson, who doesn't smoke, frequently lectures his 23-year-old daughter "who smokes like a chimney." She acts as if she is immortal and smoking can't kill her, Stefansson said. But his own research shows that her genes are probably stacked against her.

Boomerang comes back after 25 years

BRISBANE, Australia - Boomerangs really do come back - even after 25 years. Officials in an Australian Outback town were surprised when a boomerang arrived in the post. Along with it was a note from a guilt-ridden American who said he stole it years earlier from a museum in the mining town of Mount Isa, and now felt rotten about it.

"I removed this back in 1983 when I was younger and dumber," said the note, according to Mount Isa Mayor Ron McCullough. "It was the wrong thing to do, I'm sorry, and I'm going to send it back," said the note.

McCullough on Thursday gave the contrite thief's first name as Peter but said it would be unfair to release his full identity.

McCullough said the parcel was sent to the location of the old museum, now a paper manufacturing plant and community center, and was then handed to the Mount Isa council. He declined to reveal the value of the donation.

McCullough said the boomerang would be returned to its rightful owner, if he could be found.

Boomerangs were traditionally used by Aborigines as a hunting weapon. A typical returning boomerang can travel up to 150 feet in the air before returning to the thrower.

Where's the Money

TRENTON, N.J. - A $469,000 payroll error at a New Jersey company has earned an Illinois man a date with police. Anthony Armatys of Palatine, Ill., was arrested Wednesday on theft charges after allegedly receiving electronic payroll bank deposits from a New Jersey company he never worked for, authorities said.

Officials at Avaya Inc., a telecommunications provider located in Basking Ridge, discovered checks had been mistakenly direct deposited into his account for nearly five years, according to the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office.

Armatys, 34, had accepted a position with Avaya years ago, authorities said, but he rescinded the acceptance before he ever started working. However, a system error resulted in checks being deposited into Armatys' bank account from the fall of 2002 to March of 2007, when the company discovered the error, officials said.

During that time, Armatys collected more than $469,000 in pay and even withdrew approximately $1,900 from his company retirement account administered by Fidelity Investments, authorities said.

Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said it took investigators 11 months to do a thorough investigation, which resulted in the time gap between the discovery of the error and Armatys' arrest.

"The investigation had to be done, records had to be obtained, the list goes on," he said.

Armatys, who was awaiting extradition to New Jersey on Wednesday, was charged with one count of theft by deception; his bail was set at $50,000.

Commander Kurt Schroeder of the Palatine Police Department in Illinois said Armatys was taken to Cook County Jail in Chicago and would likely have an extradition hearing on Thursday. He did not know if Armatys had retained a lawyer yet.

Dog Poop Shoe Prints Lead to Arrest

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Dog isn't this man's best friend. Josue Herrios-Coronilla, 18, drove his black Camaro on the wrong side of the road Wednesday and crashed into the yard of man who owns four dogs, police said.

Police found crushed bushes, a damaged fence, an inoperable car - and a fresh shoe print in a pile of dog feces.

Following an odoriferous trail down the street, Sgt. Dale Gunter noticed a white van driving toward him. When he asked the passenger to step out, he noticed the smell of alcohol on the man's breath and evidence all over his shoes.

Herrios-Coronilla was charged with driving while impaired and drinking underage and released on $1,500 bail. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

Man shot himself in the Buttocks

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - A Scottsdale man inadvertently shot himself in the buttocks Thursday morning. Scottsdale police Sgt. Mark Clark said Daniel Leatherman, 26, heard a disturbance outside his apartment and saw a man he knew fighting with a cab driver.
Leatherman told police that the man, Cody Nunn, 25, had assaulted him in the past, so he grabbed his gun and went outside.
Leatherman told police that he accidentally dropped the gun while hiding it behind his back and shot himself in the derriere.
Nunn and Leatherman's friends took him to a local hospital. When police arrived, Clark said Nunn was drunk and disruptive. He was arrested on suspicion of disorderly conduct.
Leatherman was released from the hospital later Thursday. There were no phone listings for Leatherman or Nunn. News

Pennsylvania man in Guinness Book of World Records for geting hit and thrown by car

CONNELLSVILLE, Pennsylvania - Matthew McKnight hopes nobody manages to top his feat in the Guinness Book of World Records.

That's because McKnight holds the record for "Greatest Distance Thrown in a Car Accident" in the book's 2008 edition.

The 29-year-old record-holder lived to tell about being thrown 118 feet (36 meters) by a car that hit him while traveling about 70 mph (113 kph). He was struck on Oct. 26, 2001, while trying to help accident victims along Interstate 376 in Monroeville, about 15 miles (24 kilometers) east of Pittsburgh.

He suffered two dislocated shoulders plus a broken shoulder, pelvis, leg and tailbone. He spent two weeks in the hospital and 80 days in rehab before returning to work in April 2002.

McKnight is a volunteer firefighter and paramedic, though he was not on duty when he stopped to help the accident victims. He works full-time as a communications specialist at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.

McKnight's emergency room physician, Dr. Eric Brader, submitted paperwork for the record, which Guinness recognized in 2003. It was not listed in the book until the 2008 edition, however.
"I thought it was a big joke. Dr. Brader is known for joking around a lot," McKnight told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. "But when he brought (the paperwork) to me, I saw how serious he was."

Just when You thought the Loch Ness Monster was a fake

Just when you thought the legend of the Loch Ness Monster was a hoax or a figment of many imaginations, new video supposedly taken in Scotland is said to reveal that a Loch Ness-like "monster" was captured on film. It is believed that possible footage exists that will prove the once-thought of mythical icon really does dwell in the waters of one of the most intriguing bodies of water in Scotland.
A 55-year-old lab technician from Shipley, Yorkshire is the lucky witness, who happened to have a video camera on hand when he captured the image of a jet-black creature that appeared close to 45 feet long. It was Gordon Holmes who has described the sighted critter as moving quite fast in the water, as he looked on – at first thinking he was watching the movements of a large eel.
The video has been taken to a Loch Ness Monster enthusiast, who is also a marine biologist. In the coming months, it is Adrian Shine's hope that a proper analysis can be made. But can we really wait that long? At first sight, Shine has confessed that despite being somewhat of a skeptic, he will confirm that it is some of the best footage he has ever set his eyes on.
Holmes calculates the speed that the supposed Loch Ness Monster was traveling at was around 6 mph and that the creature maintained a course that was fairly steady. It's a good thing he didn’t go with his first impression of it being a "very big eel" because the serpent-like features of the eel are known to have been sighted many times throughout the Loch Ness. The entire thought of such a creature has been shadowed in myth, as the Loch Ness body of water that supposedly serves as its home is also considered a fascinating sight in its own right. As the largest inland body of water in Britain, it is deeper than the North Sea, as it measures close to 750 feet to the bottom.
As many theories surface as to what Holmes actually saw, a slew of possible explanations concerning the loch includes the notion that a biological creatures fitting the description of the Loch Ness Monster has appeared, where many physical anomalies have been known to occur in nature. Others believe the sighting could possibly be the way the waves were moving at the time of the supposed sighting, where a handful believe that some people fall victim to seeing what they want to see in a scenario.
The tale surrounding the Loch Ness Monster tale can be traced back to 565 AD when one of the founders of the Christian Church in Scotland wrote about the legends centered on a Scottish monster. St. Columba may have been the first to pen a record of the sightings. In more recent times, more than 4,000 Loch Ness Monster sightings have been reported, ever since the first sighting was said to have taken place during the 1930s. Many hoped that they would someday soon catch a glimpse of what could be a distant cousin of the dinosaur since Nessie is believed to carry these same characteristics.
