Profile America — Tuesday, April 17th. The full extent of the nation's worst industrial accident was becoming clear on this day 60 years ago in Texas City, Texas. Located near Galveston, the town is a major port for petrochemicals, including ammonium nitrate fertilizers. Tons of fertilizer were being loaded into a French ship when a fire was discovered. About an hour later, the ship exploded, causing heavy damage and loss of life at a huge chemical plant and damaging another ship that also blew up. Some 600 people were killed, 3,500 injured, and a third of the town's houses had to be condemned. Property damage in today's terms was close to a billion dollars. In the U.S. today, about 5,000 workers are killed and another 3,700 injured each year on the job. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau on the Web at <http://www.census.gov/>.
