Allergy/Asthma Drug --Singulair by Merck-- Linked to Suicide?

The FDA has recently called into question the safety of a popular allergy and asthma drug, Singulair, after reports linked it to suicidal behavior and mood changes.

Over the course of the past year, the drug’s manufacturer, Merck, changed the product labeling 4 times to include various warnings of side effects, including tremors, anxiousness, depression, and suicidal behavior. The drug currently pulls in $4.3 billion dollars in sales annually.

While the FDA is currently working with Merck to establish more direct causal ties based on three or four suicide reports it has received since last October, final results could take up to nine months to establish any solid conclusions.

While these reports of inquiry from the FDA are based on reports and not clinical trials (the measuring tool for drug safety), there is still a great cause for concern considering the serious nature of suicidal thoughts.

In addition, any length of time may be jeopardizing the health of consumers, as history of similar cases with GlaxoSmithKline’s diabetes pill and Merck’s painkiller Vioxx showed that acting slowly can prove deadly.

While patients taking Singulair should consult with their doctor before discontinuing use, considering natural herbal and homeopathic remedies should be a top priority to lessen risks to health.

Herbs such as Althea Officinalis (Marshmallow), Hyssopus Officinalis (Hyssop), and Sambucus Nigra (Elder) have long been used for their soothing effect on inflamed and irritated mucous membranes, while promoting respiratory health and vitality.

There is a lot that can be done naturally to support easy breathing, which can be inhibited greatly by allergies. By taking a holistic approach to health and managing all body systems in harmony, and incorporating herbs that promote respiratory health into a healthy lifestyle, you may alleviate the need for stronger treatments altogether.

Either taken internally or inhaled via an infusion, herbs have played a big role in helping to maintain open air passages and easy breathing - while also supporting the immune system for systemic protection and health.

In addition, if you are suffering from symptoms of depression, moods, or sleep disturbances, strongly consider a natural remedy for these side effects before adding another medication to your daily routine.

In combination with a healthy lifestyle and diet, many herbal and homeopathic remedies can support the healthy functioning of the brain and nervous system, thereby helping emotional well-being and maintaining mood, as well as encouraging healthy sleep patterns, and maintaining routine equilibrium.
